Microphone won't work for calls or apps

The microphone on my daughters Samsung Galaxy A51 will not work. I have tried cleaning it, restarting the phone, clearing caches, and am at a lost. How can I fix it??

Hi @rosiecheeks ,

Try using the earphones with the microphone attachment or using the phone in loudspeaker mode and check if you can be heard when on a call.

If so then this proves that the voice transmission circuitry is working.

You said that “I have tried cleaning it …” did you mean the voice inlet hole on the bottom edge of the phone?

If this is not what you meant then try clearing the voice inlet hole by using a vacuum cleaner to try to remove any possible obstructions and then test the phone to check if it now works OK. Do not use a metal pin or probe as you may damage the microphone which is behind the hole.

If still no good, try starting the phone in safe mode and check if it works OK.

If it does then a downloaded app is the cause of the problem. The trick is to find out which one. You will need to uninstall each downloaded app, one by one and test the phone in normal mode between each uninstall to see if it works OK. When it does then the last downloaded app that was uninstalled was the culprit. A downloaded app is one that was installed by you and was not already pre-loaded on the phone when you first got it.

If still no good then you may have to reset the phone to determine whether it is a software or hardware problem.

Be aware that a factory restore will erase all your data and downloaded apps. It will restore the phone to its factory default (or last system updated) condition. It will be like when you first got it.

If you decide to do this then backup the phone to the cloud or a computer before performing the factory restore. Also make sure that if the phone has a Google account that you know the account username and password as you will need this to access the phone after it has been reset (FRP lock)

Once the backup has been completed by using the phone’s backup feature, factory restore the phone by using the phone’s factory restore feature. (found in Settings)

Once it has been reset, test if it works OK.

If it now works OK (try it a few times to satisfy that it is OK), restore the phone using the backup that you made earlier with the phone’s restore feature

Once it has been restored to what it originally was, check that it still works OK. If it does then the reset has resolved the problem.

If it still doesn’t work, then there is a hardware problem with the internal microphone. Here’s the ifixit Samsung Galaxy A51 guides that will help you to gain access to the microphone. Replacements are available online. Just search for Galaxy A51 charge port board + microphone to get results for suppliers that suit you.

If you are having trouble with your microphone features, the following information can help you troubleshoot and resolve issues.

Make sure apps have access to the microphone

Microphone settings

If your microphone isn't detected after updating Windows 11, you may need to give your apps permission to use it. Here's how:

Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and make sure Microphone access is turned on.

Make sure Let apps access your microphone is turned on, then choose which apps have access. Desktop apps won't appear in this list.

If you want to give access to desktop apps, make sure that Let desktop apps access your microphone is turned on. You can't turn off microphone access for individual apps.

Others can't hear me

Try the following solutions:

If your headset has a Mute button, make sure it isn't active.

Make sure that your microphone or headset is connected correctly to your computer.

Make sure that your microphone or headset is the system default recording device. Here's how to do this in Windows 11:

Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.

In Input, go to Choose a device for speaking or recording, and select the device you want.

To test your microphone, speak into it. In Volume, make sure the blue bar moves to make sure Windows hears you.

The microphone volume is too low or does not appear to be working at all

Try the following solutions:

Make sure that the microphone or headset is connected correctly to your computer.

Make sure that the microphone is positioned correctly.

Increase the volume of your microphone. Here's how to do this in Windows 11:

Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.

In Input, select a microphone to see its properties.

In Input volume, make sure the blue bar adjusts as you speak into the microphone.

If it doesn't, go to Test your microphone and Start test. This will help you troubleshoot any issues with your microphone.
