Logicboard transplant from damaged iPhone 8 to working iPhone 8

Is it possible to transplant a logicboard that appears undamaged from an otherwise damaged iphone 8 to a working iphone 8 and retain all the data. I have the screen unlock code from the damaged iphone. Is there an issue with parts matching? Thank you.

This is a bit more complex as you think I’m afraid. First of all there are multiple parts of the phone paired to the logic board, some of them can be “fixed” if you have a programmer (think of the screen and battery to get back true tone and the battery health indicator). Items like the touch ID sensor must be moved over with the logic board as well.

So if the logic board from your original phone is still working, you can move it to the other phone, if you also transplant the touch ID sensor from the broken phone to the new phone you’ll have that also working again. You will probably get a battery warning if you keep the battery of the other phone, and if you use the screen from the none broken phone without re-programming it you’ll loose the truetone functionality.

I wouldn’t personally risk it to transfer the NAND chips from the broken phone to the new phone’s logic board.

So in short (taken your original logic board is OK) transfer following items to the new phone:

  • Logic board
  • Touch ID sensor
  • Battery (if you don’t have a programmer)
  • Taptic engine (it’s also serial linked if I’m not mistaken)

If you know a shop in the neighbourhood that reprogram screens, swing by them with the broken screen and the other screen and ask them to reprogram the new one with the old serial number, that way you’ll get back truetone. Same goes for the battery, if you want to use the battery of the none damaged phone, it’s best to have it re-programmed so the serials match with the logic board.

Thanks very much for this very thorough answer. Based on this, I decided to take the phone to a local iPhone repair shop. They basically built a new iPhone 8 around the salvaged logic board and found that it was non-responsive. The logic board showed two signs of water infiltration -- one is the red paint flag on edge of the board and the other was a blue kind of haze along the edge of the board. We're not sure if the water damage was the cause or possibly a short circuit damaged the board. So we never got to the part about data access!
