I have an older itouch first gen, when I charge it it doesn't hold the charge, can you tell me if this is more likely a battery or dock connection issue? It does take extra effort to show when it is connected to charge... seems looser than in the past

Being a first generation it is likely a battery. You can visually inspect the dock connector to see if any pins are missing, bent, or a buildup of debris. However, if the dock was faulty you may get no response when plugging the device in. The batteries are not made to last forever (planned failure).
This repair requires solder, but is the easiest of the touch batteries to install.
