Port problems

It passes the extended hardware diagnostics, boots and runs fine. But when something plugs into the USB or Firewire port, the screen gets partial blocks of wiggly lines in them. The mouse still moves, on screen items don't work, keyboard eject works for while and finally the unit is unresponsive. Reboot and its fine until something like an external drive or memory stick is plugged in. It has a couple of things plugged in already like a bluetooth usb stick, keyboard and mouse.

The first thing I would do is unplug everything currently connected to the ports. Then try whatever was giving you problems and see if the system works properly. If so reconnect the items one at a time until the problem begins again and you will have found the bad guy. I would think the most likely cause of your problems is the bluetooth stick.

A second thought could be too many items connected for the power available--you might try using a externally powered USB block. Link provided for some possibilities. Good luck

I would do as rj suggests first. I'm using a MacPro that was hit by lightning and fried all the USB ports. I went with the Sonnet Allegro PCIe card: http://www.sonnettech.com/product/allegr... and a Sonnet ethernet card. If all fails this may be a way to go. Your type of card will depend on your machines PCI slots
