Refurbish Mac Air 2011

I have a 13 year-old anxious to repair my old Air. I’d like him to do this to get the experience but not sure what he will all need.

What parts, besides the logic board, track pad and power cord would you recommend to rebuild a Mac Air 11 so it could be used as a decent backup computer?

The computer is slow, track pad relatively unresponsive (need to press it several times to work), and sometimes the computer beeps when plugged into its power cord. It has 121 GB storage with 33 GB available.

Recommendations? Thoughts?

Best to open the system up and give it a good cleaning of dust as I’m sure the fan and the heat sink fin area is caked up.

From what you are describing you clearly need a new trackpad MacBook Air 11" (Mid 2011-Mid 2012) Trackpad and I’m sure your battery is shot as well MacBook Air 11" (Mid 2011-Early 2015) Battery. You talk about a power cord are you thinking your MagSafe charger is worn-out or damaged? If that’s the case Apple 45W MagSafe Power Adapter for MacBook Air

The highest OS this system will support macOS Catalina (10.15.7) but you’ll need to clean off your drive and you won’t be able to run too much as your drive is on the tight side size wise. Getting a 256 GB would give you some elbow room.

So consider the costs and the limitations of this system.

If it beeps on startup instead of booting, then you have a dying logic board that is common on these old 2011 MBAs. In that case, there is not a lot you can do, besides disassemble it and sell it for parts.

Otherwise these laptops usually benefit from complete system format and reinstall and thermal paste cleanup / reapplication. Other than that, worn out batteries may cause it to slow down to prevent unexpected shutdowns if used on battery, and once or twice the cause for a very slow machine was a dying SSD. Trackpad button can be cleaned, but it is a nuisance and I don’t think there is any guide showing how to do it.
