Pixel 3 shut off

Phone shut off while playing music in my pocket. It will not turn on, nor does it respond at all to any wired chargers. I sat it on a wireless charger and it did get hot after some time. No response to the power button at all.

Hi guys,

Yeah, I'm late to the party and probably too late to help you, but on the off chance this will help someone else, I'll throw in my $0.02 worth.

I read through the article @wseltzer posted, and it sure looks bleak. I did see a couple of the posts referred to something similar happening to a Pixel 4 and a 4XL, so I'm going to go ahead and repost the similar experience I had with my niece's 4XL. No idea if it'll help, but here it is.

This sounds suspiciously like what happened to my niece's Pixel 4 XL. Wouldn't charge, can't reset, no power, just looking dead.

I checked everything possible outside the phone and tried every suggestion I could find on the internet for resets, button presses and chanting "Wake up!" to it, with no luck.

I resigned myself to opening it up and taking a look around. For safety's sake I unplugged the battery and checked the connector and looked carefully at everything for any possible clue as to what was going on, but found nothing.

So imagine my surprise with I plugged the battery back in and pressed the power button only to have it turn on!

I literally did nothing to the phone but unplug the battery for a while then plug it back in, and all of the sudden it's working again. I tested it every way I could think of, charging it to full then running it till it died a couple of times, and it worked exactly the way it was supposed to.

I have no explanation for this miracle cure other than thinking that something in the software got royally messed up and crashed the whole thing to the point where it couldn't even reset itself and that disconnecting the battery finally reset it so it could reboot. In theory it shouldn't be possible to lock out the hardware (hard) reset function, but I don't know what else could explain it.

If you're patient you could just wait until the battery dies completely; that should accomplish the same thing as unplugging the battery, but given the long battery life of those phones, I suspect it will take a very long time to drain.

So my suggestion is to open it up and unplug the battery. Give it a half hour or so - you probably only need maybe 30 seconds, but that's how long I had the niece's unplugged so that's what I'm sticking with - then plug it back in and see if it'll wake up.

The only difference here is that I never tried plugging it into a computer so I have no idea if it would have showed up there or not as it does with the majority of the other users who experienced this problem. The phone is working now, so I can't check it for you, sorry.

Jerry Wheeler : Thanks for your suggestion.

I tried leaving the battery disconnected for 1 hour. I used a multi-meter to check the battery - 3.8 volts.

Reconnected the battery, but, unfortunately, same result.

Glad this worked for your Pixel, though!

Well crap. Sorry it didn't help, but it doesn't look like anyone else has found an answer, so it was worth a shot.

Hopefully somebody will figure it out one day. Whole situation sucks.

@chrisporro Unfortunately with so many phones and other devices out there, iFixit has to prioritize which guides to create so it's inevitable that there are going to be some that are needed but aren't there. I ran into that same situation with the iPhone X and the Nintendo Switch and ended up authoring a couple dozen guides for just those two devices.

Anyway, I didn't have an luck finding a step by step iFixit-style guide for fixing your power button. However, I did find a YouTube video, but it starts with the assumption that most of the parts have already been removed. So here's my somewhat half-assed attempt at guiding you through this repair.

First off, I'm pretty sure you're going to have to remove the motherboard and the battery. I'd start with the battery just to be safe.

Then you'll be able to skip ahead on the motherboard guide and pull the motherboard.

Now that everything's out of the way, this YouTube video should get you through the process of removing and replacing the buttons.

Note that there are two parts to the side buttons; there's the electrical with the circuit board and the little dome clickers, and then there are the physical buttons that you push on. Either part could be at fault here and you may not be able to tell which it is until you get the phone opened up and the parts removed. It could be as simple as cleaning the buttons and their mounting holes, or it could be that the circuit board has failed and needs to be replaced. The parts shouldn't be hard to get; an internet search will turn them up easily enough. I usually start with Amazon, eBay and AliExpress, but pick whatever fits your delivery time vs. reputability vs. cost. Here are examples of each part; these are just the first ones that came up.

In theory that should get you going. Take lots of pictures as you work and use those to create your own iFixit guide for those who come after you with the same problem! It's fun and easy and you'll earn the appreciation of the community.

I did put my phone to charge the last evening. It did charge as I remember, but the next morning it was turned off. It doesn't respond to any external manipulations at all.

I was able to identify, if to connect the phone to the MacBook the prone identified as like a device "QUSB_BULK_CID:0402_SN:12345678:" (s/n "12345678" I did change here) with extra information

- "Product ID: 0x9008",

- "Vendor ID: 0x05c6 (Qualcomm, Inc)",

- "Version: 0.00",

- "Speed: Up to 480 Mb/s",

- "Manufacturer: Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM",

- "Location ID", Current Available (mA): 500",

- "Current Required (mA): 0",

- " Extra Operating Current (mA): 0"

This is definitely not a port or cable problem or maybe not a charger port, but maybe a charging module and battery over-discharged.

i went through this boot loop drama twice. one time it was in a boot loop emergency call cycle and called 911 several times. i could not stop it or turn it off. i put it in a faraday cage (martini shaker) and let it die over night. then removed the case and restarted. that worked. i think the case was slightly pressing the power btn. case replaced and phone was alright for months.

2nd time. i notice phone is boot looping and getting hot on charger. bottom line is i can't stop it from looping. it's constantly looping and getting hot. thinking the battery is very low all this time. finally i put it in the fridge for about an hour. some say freezer. i was not that brave. when i get it back out it's completely dead. i wait for it to warm to room temp, gently charge it on usb (so slow). it goes into loop. then put on fast charger and success. i notice that the battery was super low. so maybe the looping was keeping it at 0 charge?

my take away is the power button has a problem. right now battery has full charge and lasted overnight. seems back to normal. so i've avoided using the power btn until i get a new phone or repair. let it screen time out and then use the finger sensor to turn on.

and i see no power button repair here....bummer.
