I installed a new 1tb hdd and now my ps4 is overheating and turning off whenever i launch a game for some reason. i have my older 500gb hdd which works fine and the console runs games. help.

What makes you think it's overheating? If the old HDD keeps it from shutting down then it's not likely overheating but probably has some sort of issue with the new HDD.
Did you format the new HDD in your PS4 when you installed it?

Could be a problem with the new HDD. I'd also check to make sure that the fan is fully connected, and see if it might need thermal paste or thermal pads replaced to help with heat flow in the console.
