Will the Pixel 3 USB assembly help if I wiggled the port

Basically, when my USB port started working erratically on my pixel 3, instead of repairing it then I wiggled it as that tended to get it charging. After a while it stopped working. I went to a repair shop and they were able to get it working again partially; the USB cable only worked one way, but it charged. The repair guy said that in order to get it fully working would require soldering and be more difficult/expensive; it may be however that that was an alternative to ordering and waiting for parts. Should I expect the charging assembly replacement to work?

Hi Toaster,

Unfortunately, USB-C connectors have a lot more pins than the older micro, mini, and USB-A connectors use, which magnifies any connector issues. Although it is indeed possible to take the connector off and rewire broken traces, in my opinion it would be a much better solution to just replace the charging assembly.

Believe it or not, it's actually something most of us can do ourselves with the help of the iFixit repair guide. Although you can almost certainly find the part cheaper elsewhere, you can support iFixit and their repair efforts by purchasing the part directly from them. You even have the option of buying a fix kit for slightly more that includes all of the parts and tools needed to do the repair.

Here's the part you need.

So then - the pads that would be damaged by wiggling the connector should be part of the assembly, and replacing that would work?

tarafından

Under normal circumstances just wiggling the connector wouldn't damage the pads on the circuit board; usually there are also mounting points that are used to secure the connector to the board that are designed to take the stress of daily use, including being wiggled. I'm guessing that some of those mounting welds broke, either from age, repeated micro-stress (think carpal tunnel syndrome), or getting a hard bump while plugged in. Once the mounting weld goes, then the signal traces are all that holds the connector in place, and those will break fairly easily.

Anyway, yes, the connector is part of the assembly and once you replace it it'll be just like brand new.

The repair guy is talking crap. As long as the pads on the board are intact it is an easy job to solder a port in that any ‘decent’ repair shop should be able to do within the hour. It shouldn’t be any more expensive than ordering and fitting a new board.

I believe he mentioned the pads were not in fact intact
