Whenever I boot up my phone it immediately runs out of battery

This morning I dropped my phone and then whenever I tried to charge it, the battery would never go up. Then after this, it died, and when trying to reboot it, the apple logo would appear, then it would immediately run out of battery and die again. This happens every single time I try now. What is the problem with my phone?

Hi hayden,

From the symptoms you describe, it sounds like you're not getting power to the battery from the charging port, suggesting that the lightning connector may have been damaged in the drop. That would be the first thing I would try, replacing the lightning connector assembly. You can get the part any number of places such as eBay, Amazon or AliExpress, but you can also support iFixit's repair efforts if you buy it from them.

iPhone 8 Plus Lightning Connector Assembly

For an extra $5 USD you can get the Fix Kit that includes everything needed to do the repair; the part itself, all the tools you need and display adhesive for when you put it back together again. Here's the guide you'll need to do the job.

iPhone 8 Plus Lightning Connector Assembly Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide

If that doesn't do the job, the next major suspect would be the battery itself; considering the age of your phone it might be worthwhile to go ahead and put in a new one while you've already got the phone open anyway.

With any luck that'll get you going! Good luck and let us know what happens.

@lobstersoup I had a thought - have you tried charging it wirelessly? The wireless charging circuit uses a completely different connector to the motherboard, so if it is indeed the lightning port that's damaged then wireless charging shouldn't be affected. That would help confirm whether the motherboard and/or the battery were damaged or not.

I had the this problem with my iPhone XR, it was caused by a bad front earpiece assembly, it might be that or it might need a new battery, worst case it’s board damage. First look up how to put your device into restore mode and update it using iTunes on Mac or windows, if that didn’t work it may take a reset. If you keep getting error codes it is most likely an internal issue.

Happy fixing!
