No haptics or loudspeaker sound after repair

Hi! I just finished replacing the lightning port and connector and put a new battery in an iPhone 8. I noticed while testing (before buttoning everything up) that when the home button is pressed, I get a screeching sound as opposed to haptic feedback. When I toggle the vibration switch it also does not produce haptics. I listened to some audio during testing and noticed that sound only comes from the speaker inside the receiver on top, but not from the bottom speaker.

I have a feeling my use of the iFixit magnetic repair mat caused issues by laying these two parts on it (this is my first involved iPhone repair in many years) breaking internals inside. Before I order a new vibration motor and speaker, I just want to confirm my suspicions with the community.

i doubt putting any of your parts on a magnetic would cause parts to malfunction. that said, i experienced something similar. i replaced the charging flex on an iphone 7. when i was done, the taptic engine would go off when i adjusted volume, the volume itself would go up and down in jumps not the usual increments, the speaker output was poor. i ultimately ended up moving the motherboard and other key parts into a different iphone 7 back casing with its original charging flex. put a different motherboard, speaker and taptic into the case with the questionable charging flex and it exhibited the same symptoms. based on that i figure it was just a "bad" charging flex so i scrapped it and put in a new one, and that one worked fine. at this point, it could have been a sub-standard/defective part or something could have happened when i replaced it

In this case, if I adjust the sound to right or left channels, to the left I get no sound output and on the right or centered I get poor output from what sounds like the built-in receiver's speaker. And if I tap the home button it makes a metallic noise as opposed to a "click" from the haptic motor. That's what led me to think that the mat's magnets might have affected internals... very confusing.

if the phone parts were affected by a magnetic field as weak as a work mat, then the magnets used to attach phones to car mounts (and the like) would wreak real havoc on a phone's ability to operate. no i'm not a magnetic or electro-magnetic expert, but in addition to having used mag work mats, i also use very strong magnets (harvested from hard drives) around my work space to find and pick up tiny screws that i drop. never had any issues with parts that got near (or even stuck to) the magnet.

No this all makes perfect sense, I was just thinking under the mindset of mechanical hard disk drives and not wanting to put them on or close to a magnet. Much appreciated!

Hi Nathan,

I'm with @beekerc regarding the magnetic mat; I've used several of them for years and have never had an issue caused by parts placed on one. Given the strength of the magnetic field that has to be generated by the Taptic Engine to move a chunk of metal, the magnetism in a mat is negligible, and if the lighting connector was susceptible to magnetic fields, the Taptic Engine would have killed it long ago.

First thing I'd suggest is going through and redoing all your connectors; the ones to the speaker, the Taptic Engine and the logic board, especially. With those big connectors it's easy to have them only partially seated resulting in all kinds of inexplicable behavior.

If that doesn't work, next thing I'd try is getting a replacement lighting connector assembly from iFixit; they have a lifetime warranty on their parts and in my experience they're very easy to work with and willing to do what it takes to make things right.
