Can I add a ssd hard drive when it seems to have never had a hd?

To begin, I’m mechanical but not incredibly computer-savvy.

I have an i5 late 2012 emc2544 21.5” iMac. It has been running fine but I have run out of room. It said it has a 64gb hard drive.

I bought a 1tb ssd upgrade kit from ifixit and opened it up tonight. I was surprised to see no drive in the slot. I’m unfamiliar with all of the terms used and just trying to figure out if I can add this drive to my system as an internal hard drive or if I have to put it into an external case and just use it like that.

I’ve seen things that make me think I can get cables and add it but I’m just not sure.

Update (02/02/2023)

There is no hard drive in the little compartment.

Can you take a picture of your current drive posting it here for us to see and point us to what you bought so we have a better idea.

OK, I think I get it where’s the drive?? Well hidden!

Your system came with a blade SSD which is mounted on the backside of the logic board. Review this guide iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2544 Blade SSD Replacement

So I would leave it be and just add in a second drive following this guide iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2544 Hard Drive Replacement. You will need to get these two cables Data cable and Power cable

@jfryjfry - Here’s the drive connectors on the back side which I circled.

Added a pic to the initial post. Thanks for taking a look.

I put it back together to check what it says it has and it has 250gb flash storage. So I’m guessing it never had an actual hard drive. Can I add one???

I’m cautiously optimistic… I see no place to plug the two cables onto the board and the installation procedure obviously shows them already in position because that one came with them.

I haven’t taken the board out and cannot see underneath it but I can’t imagine there are two open slots. Or should there be??

Parts ordered! I’ll update when I pull it apart (again!)
