Possible/smart to use NAS HDD inside iMac (mid-2017 5k)?

Greetings!

I am preparing to add a 2Tb OWC Aura pro to replace my 1 Tb Fusion Drive and wonder if it would be better to use the NAS drive IN the 3.5" cavity for extra internal storage. Not sure if power consumption would be too high or not but they seem to have higher spindle speeds and larger capacities at similar price points to regular HDD,

Any recommendations, either way?

Thanks in advance!

While it may not look any different than a standard HDD, a NAS drive is different!

NAS drives don’t offer the deep cache buffer a standard drive offers, so while it will work, they tend to run hotter when used within a PC or Mac.

If you are looking for performance I would swap out the HHD with SSD. It also runs cooler than what a HDD or a NAS drive.

Depending on your work flow as you are going with a blade SSD as well. I would go with a smaller blade drive unless you are workin in sizable video work.

Basically I would slick with a 1TB blade and go with a larger SATA drive either HDD or SSD. Setting up a dual drive is by far the best setup! Here the blade SSD is the boot drive as well as hosts the applications. Leaving a good portion of the drive vacant so the OS and Apps have room for there caching needs (VirtualRAM, Paging & Scratch space) as well as extra space for SSD wear leveling enough space to work efficiently.

The second drive (SATA) is used to hold your content purchase’s (music and vids) and your work.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the quick answer. I already went overboard with the 2Tb Aura Pro (not sure exactly from memory) which will be boot drive. Also plan to install a WD Blue 4Tb as overflow. Will be also swapping CPU to the i7 one you referred to in a different post while I'm inside.

@mbed - I would do the CPU change first before you change anything else. Make sure it works then do the blade drive and the SATA drive together as you have a Fusion Drive.

You do want to make a TimeMachine backup before you start making sure you get everything backed up.

You also want to make a bootable USB thumb drive 32GB with what your systems running as you’ll want boot up under it to prep the drives.
