Stairs or Teeth Effect with Video on NES


I have purchased NES from an online store and when I am playing games, it has some weird stairs effect, like every next line shifts with 1 pixel and then after 8, it goes back. On the letters/text it looks really bad. It is the same using Composite and NESRGB:

There are also weird yellowish shadows on the objects:

Any ideas about what it could be and what to try to figure it out?

@tridy what type of display are you using for it and what settings did you use?


@oldturkey03. I am using a 15" portable monitor. I tried to connect another NES to it, and it did not have the problem.

NES that I have the problem with shows the same problem on this monitor, LED TV and capture card that I created the screenshots with.


I got another NES and tested Composite on it and figured out that NES with NESRGB in Composite mode and another NES with just Composite produce the same picture. So this confirmed that the CPU/PPU is working properly on the modded one.

I decided to research OSSC settings, even though SNES and SMD worked well with OSSC out of the box.

After some time, I found PAL profiles online (, and surprisingly ossc_profile_0.89_NESRGB.json fixed the sawtooth problem with NESRGB. Here on the screenshots I took, I show the standard profile on the left, and PAL profile on the right. I also changed the aspect ratio for PAL, so the screenshots look a bit different. But it is possible to see that both the lines and text are straight:

So, PAL profile fixed sawtooth problem. Now I need to figure out the yellow shadows and especially the flashing background on Blaster Master.

Getting PAL profiles for OSSC fixed the sawtooth/stairs problem. SNES and SMD worked without any issues on the standard OSSC profile but NESRGB needed a separate pal profile that I got from:

Now, I need to figure out the yellow shadows on Duck Tales and especially the flashing background on Blaster Master.

Could be a dirty cartridge connector inside. You'll have to open it up and remove the connector block to clean it.

I have tried cleaning it and even bought a new connector. Cleaned the connectors on the board as well. The problem persists.

There is also an effect of flashing/blinking background when I am using NESRGB:

while when on Composite, the blinking background is not present.

I tried it with 2 different cartridges of the same game with the same result.

@tridy that looks like a sawtooth pattern which is a composite video artifact. I would try a different set of HD cables and see if that resolves it.

Okay, if your NESRGB system and composite video system are displaying the same effects, try checking it with

  1. Another TV, or
  2. With different HD cables or cables of the use

# If it's a cable problem it could have been noticed. If it's a TV problem that means whatever connector that your TV is using is faulty.

I tried TV, Monitor, and a capture card and I do not think this is a problem with the cable. I have tried the following cables:

1. MultiOut > Scart

2. [Retrovision] MultiOut > YPBPR (with OSSC) [SNES version but for MultiOut]

3. Composite cable.

Here are comparison screenshots that I did.

Due to the blurring, Composite looks better than NESRGB:

I think that the sawtooth effect appears on both Composite and NESRGB.

I tried the cable with SNES and it shows perfectly. OSSC works well with SNES and SMD. So, it does not look like this is the problem with the cable or OSSC or the Monitor. In addition, Composite does not use OSSC and has its own cable but still has the sawtooth effect.
