If I remember correctly the focus sensor is on the bottom of the mirror box, within the mirror unit a second mirror aims some of the reflected light heading to the eyepiece downward. So could the secondary mirror not be coming back down when the shutter release is pressed? Is the viewfinder image visible in case the main mirror is getting stuck.

I don't know that much about the guts of camera. But it does work at times.

How would you fix that if that is my problem?

@benjamin95833 - I would take the lens off and put the camera into a long manual shutter speed and looking carefully how the main mirror reacts, is it going up as fast as going down? I would run it a few times and if you have a cool place put the camera there (keep it dry) repeat to see if the lube had gotten gummy. After watching the primary mirror you put should see at an angle a second mirror which aims the light down. Again watch what it does did it get stuck?

The issue you face it’s a bit tricky to clean the hinge pin and lube it again without getting the detector dirty which you really don’t want to do.

This may need a good camera repair person to fix this.
