Pixel3: replace USB port or battery first? ..can test b4 reassembly?

My Pixel3 won't charge at all thru USB port (tried various cables), and I don't have a wireless pad (to test if battery still charges OK). So should I attempt replacing the charge port first? ..and can I then power-On 'test' it with original battery while phone is still open without fully resealing rear cover? Or if I replace battery first, can I 'test' it against original charge port while phone is still open (rear cover on but not sealed)? [Yes I'll replace both (have parts), but I'd at least like to learn if the fault was the port or battery] Likewise, once I've replaced both, can I power On to test it while phone rear cover is connected (but not sealed)?

Hi AdahS,

To answer your question, yes, you can test the battery first thing; as a matter of fact, you can just plug in a new battery before you even remove the old in order to test it. All you have to do is remove the rear cover, disconnect the fingerprint sensor, then take out the wireless charging coil. At that point you have access to the battery connector and you could unplug the old battery and plug in the new one. I can't say for sure, but chances are good the phone will boot without the fingerprint sensor or the charging coil attached; if it does so successfully you'll be able to see the amount of charge on the battery and whether plugging it in correctly charges the replacement battery.

If it works with the new battery, you can then shut everything down, unplug the new battery and proceed on with the battery replacement procedure.

On the other hand, if plugging in the new battery doesn't help anything, then yeah, it may well be time to replace the charging port. For testing, I would reassemble it up to the point of putting the charging coil back in and see if it boots without the back cover (and thus the fingerprint sensor). You might have to temporarily plug in the fingerprint sensor if it refuses to boot or let you log in without it.

But before you start on that path, let me check a couple of things with you. First of all, please tell me you've tried a different charger and a different cord, right? I'd feel pretty stupid if I went to all the trouble to replace a charging port only to find out I had a bad cord!

Secondly, I'd think it would be worth the investment to pick up an inexpensive wireless charger in order to try and isolate the fault to either the charging port or the battery. Since the wireless charging uses an entirely different set of components and circuitry, it would point pretty definitively to either the port or the battery depending on whether it charges wirelessly or not. You can pick one up on eBay for under $5 USD, so to me it would be a worthwhile investment.

One final note; if you decide to go ahead with the charging port replacement, as long as you're in there anyway I'd suggest replacing the battery as well whether it needs it or not. Your phone is five years old now, and that's getting close to the lifetime for the battery. You're right there in the neighborhood anyway and it's only a few extra steps to take the old one out.

Thanks JerryW,

My Pixel3 (which I really wanted to work OK until Pixel7) failure to charge troubles likely began during a month of Mexico bus travels in Dec2021 ..perhaps from a sketchy 120V outlet in a budget room? (damaged cord? battery? port? charger? mobo?). Early 2022 it would no longer charge slowly with a Belkin or Pxl6 USB cable +Anker PwrPrtIIINano charger either ..but I sorta recall putting it on a wireless pad at TMobile during Px3~>Pxl6Pro data/apps transfer. (I've hesitated to buy a cheap charging pad cuz I've 'read' that Pixels have some peculiar wireless charging requirements ..such that generic chargers either wouldn't work or be so slow that it'd be faster and more Reliable to simply plug a cord into AC). Why fixit now? I don't want to risk micro-vibrations trashing the camera OS components of my Px6Pro if mounted on my Motorcycle handlebar ..but the Px3 could be resurrected for such GPS navigation duties ;-)

I dislike the weight/bulk of 6Pro ..vs Pxl3 (~Galaxy/iPhone) is 'just right'

@adahs Yeah, I've got the 6 Pro myself, having upgraded for the 2 XL, so I know what you mean about the size/weight of the 6 Pro.

As far as the wireless charging pad, that's really just meant as a diagnostic tool rather than for use with charging regularly. I had a very cheap one I used with my 6 Pro for quite a while; it wasn't quick but since I was setting the phone on it when I went to bed, it had all night to charge so it was never a problem.

In hindsight, I shouldn't have first replaced the battery (yes, Pxl3 boots OK without charging coil or back cover fingerprint sensor attached) ..cuz the FAIL was the USB charging port. If I'd simply had a cheapo wireless pad for original battery 'diagnostics' I'd have saved $33 cost of unnecessary new battery. [I mistakenly thought I was 'saving' S&H cost of separate battery order; duh.] Replaced charging port: original battery promptly charged from <1% to full ..so I'll use it for awhile (poster tape under battery, 'temporarily' seal rear cover) ..'saving' new battery +3 custom tapes, but for what_? ;-(

Now that I've experienced accessing Pixel3 innards, I don't mind further tinkering ..BUT! it took several frustrating tries across several days to create a molecule of seam gap to begin to remove back cover without breaking it ;-( ..I'll post elsewhere about that.
