Change out PCI SSD drive for a SATA HDD / SDD drive?

I have a iMac intel 27” mid 2017 with a 256GB SSD, an old work computer with the security software still on the computer (It won’t let me have admin control controlled) I could not download the OS updates.

I’m pretty sure that I don't have macOS 10.13 installed that was released in Oct 2022. (Required by IiFixit for new PCI SSD drive. I went on IFixit web site and they pointed me to the SSD blade upgrade bundle. Is this kit needed to replace SSD drive? I just need no know which kit to order.

You have a few different elements to your question let’s try to distill them

System management software (SMS)

Blade SSD swap out

Installing a SATA based drive HDD or SSD

Many SMS also alter the systems firmware so depending on what was used you may need deeper skills to clean the firmware.

Swapping out the blade SSD is one option but it is a bit more expensive than installing a SATA drive.

If you replace the blade SSD with a SATA drive you will need to pull the logic board to remove the blade SSD and plug in the missing SATA drive cable and you will also need the mounting screws as well. Here’s one source:

First of all thank you for helping me out. Before this gets to complicated and over my head this is what I want to do.

1. Replace the 256 SSD hard drive with a 1TB SSD hard drive

2. Start fresh with the operating software which I don't have but under stand I can download off internet

3. Get rid of the security software so I am the admin for the computer.

4. Not really worried about the blade SSD unless this is something I need to do also.

1 - Review this guide to swap out the blade SSD with a replacement (what you call the 256 SSD hard drive) iMac 27" 2017 Blade SSD Replacement and just be done with it.

2 - Yes, you will need to access via Apples web site to download the needed macOS for your system. I would recommend setting up a bootable OS installer USB thumb drive using a second Mac as you will need to get a newer version that what Apples internet recovery offers.

3 - As I explained that is not always possible depending on what was used.

4 - You need to either swap out the Blade SSD with a new one or just remove it. Then if you just want the SATA HDD or SSD follow this guide iMac 27" 2017 Hard Drive Replacement and get the needed parts listed above.
