On which component is the system stored?

On which component is the system stored? And if I exchange this, will I have a different serial number in the system? My Macbook is broken and I want to exchange the logic board.

Unlike older MacBook Pro’s which had a removable SSD drive. From 2016 onwards the SSD logic was integrated into the logic board physically.

A SSD is made up with two major elements the controller and the storage (Flash chips). Apple split the controller aspect into the T1 chip and then into the T2 chip which allowed the data content to be in real time encrypted! The storage stayed the same using Flash chips, but you can’t transfer the chips as the data is encrypted! Apple then integrated the T2 function within the M series SoC chip.

So the bottomline here is the act of replacing the logic board won’t allow you to recover the physical aspect of the storage. That is why it’s so important to backup your data to an external drive or on the internet Cloud storage of some sort be it Apple or other vendor.

OK, I said physically transfer, I didn’t say you still couldn’t access the data from your logic board, but that would mean trying to hobble it together long enough to back it up. A good shop should be able to do this unless the logic board is really badly damaged.

So the last issue is when you replace the logic board the power button that’s is mated to it needs to be transfers as well as the TouchID within the button is the key for access to your system. Without the one that’s married to the given board you have nothing! So be careful! Some sellers only ship the logic board as it’s deemed as a parts board to salvage some of the components. Others, sometimes mess up shipping just a grabbed out of the barrel button which is not keyed to the logic board.

The data on my Mac is not important, I've only ever edited photos on it and then put them back on an external hard drive.

So if I buy a suitable logic board for the A2338, which is not locked and has a Touch ID component. should my MacBook just turn on I can sign in again with Apple ID. correct?

When I go into the MacOS system later, do I see the serial number from the replacement Mac? correct?

@marius44 - Yes, replacing your logic board and power button (TouchID) with a clean board is possible and the Serial number of the case and what the firmware won’t match.

Years ago, Apple would ship boards with no S/N and we had a tool to burn the same S/N the case had, that’s not done anymore.

You will need to do a fresh OS install and during the process you will add your Apple ID so it’s linked to your iCould account and the files which you have stored there as well as allow you to use the Find My Services.

Ok, so summarized again. I'm buying a suitable logic board for the A2338. After that I remove my old one and the new one is important that the fingerprint sensor is included and the logic board is not locked or still connected to iCloud. After I turn on the Mac and reinstall macOS?

tarafından

@marius44 - Yep! The act of installing the OS allows you to OWN the system via your local system account and password (the apps/data on your drive) as well as your iCloud account which you already have with your other Apple devices.

Thank you very much <3
