iPhone could not be restored - unknown error (9) - after battery repla

I replaced the battery in my iphone 12 and afterwards the apple logo would pop up and the go black. I held down the power button and was prompted to plug it into a computer to restore it. I did and at first it pulled up the serial number and tried to update, then the serial number went to "na", and when I tried to restore the factory settings it says that an unknown error (9) occurred and it could not be restored. Any ideas?

Hi Jay,

Normally a simple battery replacement shouldn't cause the kind of issues you're seeing. Did anything go wrong or did you have any problems during the process? Did you just buy a replacement battery and install it, or were you doing a more extensive replacement; i.e., reusing the BMS, adding a tag-on board, etc.?

I'd suggest reopening the phone and rechecking any connectors that were unplugged in the original repair. Check both sides of each plug with a magnifying glass and a bright light looking for bent or broken pins on either side. Clean everything with 90% of higher concentration isopropyl alcohol and reassemble then retest.

Once you've done that, come back here and update your question with the results of what you found and we'll figure out what your next step should be.

Ok thank you! I did it and the same error is happening. It even initially identifies the phone with its serial number again and then gives the same error message.

It was just the battery, although the old one was swollen and the back glass was cracked (my 14-year-old's phone). We have had fun taking it apart and putting it together though.

@jay23346 Have you tried plugging the original swollen battery back in to see if it works with the old one? If so, sounds like the replacement battery is at fault.
