After screem replacement microphone only works for calls

After replacing my screen with the iFixit one, i've notticed that my microphone only works for a phone call. Nothing else works, nor google assistant, nor the recorder nor nothing. Top mic seems to work as on the video recording it is the one that is getting the sound

Nah, it a garbage device. I won't be buying another. Honestly will probably will go back to Samsung. It would be easy if we could look and see where the microphone is.

As a workaround, I can use speaker phone and yell into the speaker. That seems to work... But nothing else works.

I really don't have the time to pursue this to the next level. But I might just make the time. This is ridiculous that Google is not helping with this problem.

After months of dealing with this issue, still no help from Google or their staff. No microphone replacement parts available. It is the strangest problem I've ever encountered with technology. I meticulously replaced the screen as instructed the first time. Flashed my fingerprint scanner (instructions not provided) and then tested the phone. That's when I noticed the microphone issue. No previous issues with the mic until this screen replacement. So what do I do? Order another adhesive and open the phone back up. Nothing was out of place, bent, or broken. But my mic is still not working correctly. The mic seems to work on phone calls, but I've been told that sometimes it sounds like I'm underwater. This happens about a 50% of the time. With any other app or feature the mic is completely non-functional. TTS no longer works, Google assistant no longer works. My theory is this: its got to be a software issue. Maybe the flashing affected something? Why else would it work perfect (sometimes) when on the phone?

tarafından

I've tried every fix I can find. Nothing helped. I kind of wish I had just lived with the dead pixel vs dealing with a broken mic. I really like Google phones. But I'm not so sure if I'll buy another. The fact that no one from their team has even reached out to try to fix this is disappointing to say the least...

tarafından

Same problem here. Had the screen replaced, but the fingerprint sensor wasn't working. So I used the workaround to flash the fingerprint sensor firmware, and it works since then, but one of the three mics is now out of order, and the update to Android 15 didn't change anything. It's definitely a firmware problem. But there are no solutions available to my knowledge. It's the main mic (lower edge) that is out of order; phone calls use the upper mic, too, but you sound washed out as it's far away from your mouth usually. All applications that rely on the lower mic solely (voice messages, Assistant...) don't work.

tarafından

Before flashing the fingerprint scanner fix - did all microphones work?

That's the question we need answering...

I have the same problem. When my screen broke I replaced it with a cheaper non official one (around 100 bucks). I had this problem there but I thought it’s because it’s unofficial. I replaced it then with an official one from ifixit but nothing changed. It’s a software problem. Like John, it happens to me like 50% of the calls. A new idea is maybe the ANC’s fault. I saw at the specs it has active noise cancellation and a few times I’ve been told by my callers that they hear perfectly the background noises but they can’t hear me clearly, so I thought the ANC tries to block the wrong sounds. Is there a way to disable anc?

HI All,

It is hardware issue. please read this and run the test. It will show what is the problem.

It doesn't make any sense to be a hardware issue. Changing a screen doesn't interfere with the position of the bottom microphone ...

Maybe it's when we updated the fingerprint sensor with win10 drivers ?

I just tested this on my phone. Did not work. Did not correct the problem in any way.

Both of this apps work, but the one with the back logo you have to start a record in the music option.

So

1 your start a recording

2 stop the recording

And the send any voice message in WhatsApp.

That worked form me.

It seems to activate the other 2 mics (top and camera lens)

tarafından

Yes it works, but this is bull $@$*!!

We spend so much money on what's suppose to be a top of the line phone.

Google, this may be my LAST Pixel phone!!!

BTW folks, it "MyRecorder" app from the play store that "fires" things up for me.

The sock "Recorder" app does NOT"

tarafından

This helped me!

It somehow makes all the other apps use mic 2/3 (like in phone calls and video recording). The app is "Voice Recorder & Voice Memos" by Dairy Apps & Notes... "MyRecorder" is another way to find it.

Thank you whoever you are, you made Assistant useful again.

It is definitely a software/firmware issue somewhere in the phone but I can't tell you what apps are causing the problem or what apps are unrelated. I have had this same issue since I replaced my screen with the iFixIt replacement and flashed my fingerprint scanner. So that works now, but even with these issues, I definitely do have some apps that are still working fine with the lower mic, which suggests that it is an issue with specific apps not commingling with each other or their settings/default settings/firmware/software updates are not addressing the issue or not installed/setup correctly.

For me, most (but not all) of my issues involve the pre-installed (integrated) software and/or features along with all of the Google run apps I currently have installed that call for a microphone.

Apps and features including the likes of the Recorder, Google Assistant, GBoard, or the Now Playing feature are definitely not responding to my voice, yet some apps like phone work fine.

I have tried every recommended option here (other than a factory reset) without any success. I hope there is a solution or work around shared soon, because I am not looking forward to having to hit the Reset button.

Hope I was able to give some insight that may lead to a solution and not just the same information regurgitated from the top.

I also agree that it must be a software issue. Ive been inside this phone several times and there's no indication that the lower mic would be affected from a screen replacement. My question is this: has anyone tried the dreaded factory reset option? Personally I have not. Wondering if anyone here has before I consider testing it.

tarafından

By any chance, did you try reflashing stock Android?

So I had the same issue after screen replacement, for weeks nothing worked. Miraculously after a software update it started working. My conclusion is that it's a software problem most likely caused by the flashing of the fingerprint. I had tried all the other "fixes" and nothing worked.

Which update? Did you try to reflash the whole OS before this happened?

Later Update (03.12.2024) - reflashed to latest factory image / fully wiped everything - still not working :(

It’s been like several months I replaced the screen but I didn’t flash the fingerprint. Boredom I guess, I used a code to unlock the phone. I flashed it last month, nothing changed with the mic, the problem remains the same

@lucianobuszmicz This seems to be a common issue with the Pixel 7. I've linked a thread here that you may find helpful. Someone suggests cleaning out the microphone hole with first a vacuum then blowing air into it. It is possible that during the screen replacement process, some finger dirt or perhaps adhesive from the screen got into the microphone.

Hi @dannish,

Wouldn't a blocked microphone hole also prevent the microphone from working properly on calls?

The OP says it does work but only on calls, nothing else. Presumably they're not using the phone in speaker mode on calls when saying this

tarafından

@jayeff That's what I thought until I read the thread, apparently certain software on that phone uses both top and bottom mics, some only use 1. So those which rely on 1 mic will be completely unusable, but those which use both still work. It's odd but the solution on there seems popular.

I've experienced OCA getting into a speaker and dulling the sound quite significantly during a phone screen repair myself so it could be possible for mics as well. Mic holes are even smaller than earpiece speaker holes so that could just be it.

tarafından

@dannish

Fair enough.

Cheers

I tried this fix but still no luck. It would appear after replacing my screen with an Ifixit OEM screen, my bottom mic no longer works. I was quite careful during the replacement. Is it possible I broke something internally? Everything else seems to function normally except the bottom mic.

@johnjanis

Same here.. si frustating.. juste waiting to see if the next software update will fix it

Has anyone had any luck with this problem? My mic stopped working after screen replacement. They had to flash the fingerprint scanner to make it work again. The bottom mic doesn't work for phone calls

Had the same problem with microphone after replacing the screen myself, everything else worked flawlessly. Tried everything, no software solution will work, it is a hardware issue. Sent it to google and they replaced the motherboard and sent it back to me. Somehow they did not realize the screen had been replaced so they didn't charge me anything.

It's working only as temporary fix.

Even with the Factory reset...IT dosen't work...change 3 Times the screen ( ifixit send me these replacement), and dit mot work...

tarafından

The app technically works for me but it actually doesn't "fix" the bottom mic. The app basically overrides 2 of the mics (top and bottom) to actively listen. So in actuality the bottom mic is still "broken"

Hi everyone,

I recently replaced the screen on my Pixel 7 Pro, and after reassembly, the bottom microphone stopped working. While inspecting the motherboard under a microscope, I noticed that a small component near the screen connector might have been damaged during reinstallation.

It’s possible that this component is part of the microphone circuit, which could explain the issue. Has anyone experienced something similar? Could someone help identify the component and confirm whether it’s related to the microphone function?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Could you please enter the pixel test menu and test all 3 microphones and see if there is any other microphone that is problematic? (Enter the code *#*#7287#*#* in the phone app)

Mic2 is the camera microphone

Mic3 is the earpiece microphone

It sounds like the bottom microphone might not be functioning properly after the screen replacement. Here are a few things to check:

1. Check for Obstructions – Make sure there’s no dust, debris, or adhesive (like from a screen gasket or epoxy) blocking the bottom microphone hole.

2. Inspect the Microphone Flex Cable – The Pixel 7 Pro’s bottom mic is part of a flex cable that could have been accidentally disconnected, damaged, or not seated properly during the repair. Try reseating the connector.

3. Test in Safe Mode – Booting into Safe Mode can rule out any software issues. If it works in Safe Mode, a third-party app might be interfering.

4. Check Sound Settings – Go to Settings > Sound & Vibration > Microphone to see if there’s anything unusual.

5. Try a Factory Reset – If the issue is software-related, a reset could fix it. Just make sure to back up data first.

6. Replace the Mic – If none of the above works, the microphone itself may be damaged and might need replacement.

Ok. What worked for me

Contacted Google, told them about my issue - that a mic isn't working anymore and they arranged a replacement with a refurbished unit - at no cost for me.

The decide was out of warranty.

Please try that. Do NOT mention replacing the screen on your own.

Unfortunately, the Pixel 7 Pro was never officially available in Poland, so I’d have to go through an external warranty service—which isn’t always the most cooperative option. :)

I already sold my old phone, but just to add this here: I had the screen replaced, and needed to update the fingerprint sensor with a workaround flashing the firmware, but then the main mic stopped working. Nothing helped until I made a factory reset before selling it; after that, it worked again in all tests. Definitely a firmware conflict in my case.
