iPhone 8 plus won’t turn on

After several years of abuse, the battery health was low and needed to be charged 2-3 times per day. At one point it would hardly take a charge and one morning simply did not turn on anymore. I got a new phone and forgot about it. Now i decided to get it working again, ordered a battery kit with the tools and screen seal etc. Replaced the battery nothing. No apple logo no « black screen » just nothing. Tried to connect to a computer and still nothing. Wireless charger got it charged just fine though. Using my new phone i was able to look at the pins in the port and one pin is out of place. Looked it up on google and it would be the power pin( 4th or 5th pin depending on how you look at it) this explains the connection trouble but could it be the reason why it doesn’t turn on? Any ideas?

Hi Jeremie,

A bad pin on the power port would explain why it was having trouble charging. I would have expected your replacement battery to have some small amount of charge, though, so I'm a little surprised that it didn't come on with the new battery, at least until it drained the battery and couldn't recharge it.

It is possible, however, that the battery came fully discharged such that the battery alone wasn't sufficient to power up the phone. It's more the exception than the rule, but it certainly does happen. The fact that you were able to charge it wirelessly says your new battery is almost certainly fine and the issue with it now is that it's not getting charged by the lightning port.

It may be possible to bend that pin back into place, but you'll need to be careful about shorting the pins and causing yourself more problems. If you're going to try, I'd suggest opening the phone up and unplugging the lightning port connector on the motherboard to be safe; unplugging the battery would be the next best choice.

Ultimately, the correct fix here is to replace the lightning port. Unfortunately it's a huge pain in the butt on your phone since it's routed under the motherboard so it ends up requiring you to take out a lot of parts to get to it. But it is quite doable; if you've successfully changed the battery then you've already got the skills you need to accomplish this!

I'm going on the assumption that when you say the wireless charger worked, that means the phone was able to boot up and operate correctly, so if that's not the case let me know since we'd need to figure out a different strategy.

Anyway, the guide for replacing that lightning port assembly is right here on iFixit.

And of course you can buy the parts you need here, or any of the major sites like eBay, Amazon or AliExpress, among others.

Hi Jerry, thanks for your answer. And no it does not boot up after fully charging wirelessly. Charger has a a blue light while charging and turns red when done, so that is what I’m going on for the charging. I am considering changing the port, i took a quick look at the guide and looks like a p.i.t.a but i can manage.

Again thanks for your input

Boy, I hate to say it, but this doesn't sound good. The wired and wireless charging use completely different circuitry and connections to the logic board, so if one doesn't work it doesn't affect the other one.

Your experience with the wireless charger says that the charging circuitry does seem to be working, but you're not getting any other sign of life on the phone. While we could chalk up the failure to connect to a computer to a bad charging port, there should be other signs of life for instance it should still vibrate when you toggle the silent/ring switch.

In the absence of any other indicator, I'm suspicious that there's something more going on with your phone. To be honest, if it was mine I would try replacing the charging port but if that doesn't do it you likely have more serious problems.

Keep us updated on what you decide and what you find as you go along.

Well, not what i was hoping for bit I’ll order a port and then open it back up while i wait for it to come in. Maybe i forgot something?!

@jeremiejones I’d remove the battery again and check you haven’t damaged the power button ribbon when you removed the old one.
