FW Fail Message in Overheating iPod

My iPod 3rd gen doesn't start, it shows the Apple logo then it disappears and the HDD keeps spinning. I got it into diagnostics mode, ran all the tests and the Firewire ID showed the "FW FAIL" and in another test I also got the "1394 FAIL" which I think is also firewire related.

I believe this might be a problem related to a component inside the logic board or the power management IC. I would like to know how I could test the components to check for a short or if anyone has experience with this type of failure could point the components that handle battery and firewire power in the logic board.

@topoceni what on it does not start? You get into the diagnostics menu and it appears to be going through the tests. 1394 is most likely the test for the TI1394 IC. I understand that it displays "FW Fail" what does it tell you about your HDD and what exact symptoms does it have? Has it ever worked for you? How did you charge it thus far?

@oldturkey03 the iPod does not start. Whenever I turn it on it shows the apple logo while the drive is spinning, then the logo disappears. It doesn't boot into Disk Mode since it stays at the apple logo. It can only show the diagnostics mode.

If I run the ports test in diagnostics mode the iPod recognizes USB but it doesn't recognize FW, strangely it shows that is charging the battery (whenever is connected).

If I try to start it on battery power it only goes to the Apple logo and it stays there, same thing with disk mode.

The logic board overheats on the IC CY7C68013 and also PP5002.

HDD is fine (I tested it) and I charge it by FireWire (I got the original adapter and the USB/FW cable). I bought this iPod last year and it worked fine until about two months ago when this problem showed up.

@topoceni sure sounds like something shorted out since it does heat up. Let's see if there are any schematics (official ones are not) available anywhere. Otherwise you may need to look toward a replacement logic board.

@oldturkey03 I hope so. It would be very useful since this model seems to be very prone to these type of shorted components. I have other three logic boards but none of them work, I'm hoping to find the culprit and source the spare from one of these boards.

@topoceni I actually have one here somewhere :-) that is functioning. I'll try and find it and see if I can get any measurements etc. off it.

Hello folks. I'm still trying to fix my iPod, but it has been troublesome since I have no idea where to start or what to replace. I think that this issue might be caused by a faulty power management IC or FireWire chip, however, these models tend to short pretty frequently, based on this, I decided to upload pictures of the logic board of my iPod 3rd gen to check which are the parts in the logic board that handle the FireWire 12V output. If any of you'd like to help I uploaded the pictures into this google folder: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folde...

What's the point of this? I would like to start to create a post that can outline the chips in the 3rd gen logic board, I believe that a handful of us iPod collectors still use and care for this model, being so prone to shorts I think that a guide with the chips that handle and distribute the 12 Volts would be pretty useful.
