PS4 Pro refurbishing project 70xx to 72xx Error (Finished)

So I am on an adventure with refurbishing a PS4 Pro given to me for free from a friend. Originally the PS4 Pro would periodically power off. This is a 70xx model so the fan is blowing really hard and after some time would power off.

However I am not interested in fixing any issues with the board or it's current issues. As of now, from inspecting and looking through a lot of issues, I have determined that the overheating and repeated disassembly as finally caused an issue where the fan no longer kicks in and runs at an idle state until it powers off from overheating. I'm pretty sure without some more advanced tooling or tricks involving soldering or fixing the heat sensor on the board (presumably in the CPU). It could have literally flexed itself to death in some way I cannot see.

This segment is important to pay attention to: The current step I am running through now is a doozy and it might not actually work. I have currently replaced the 70xx motherboard with a 72xx model (NVG-001). Which actually fits in the 70xx, save for one minor black screw. The next issue was the power supply which does not work with the 72xx board, even the 4 pin connector is keyed to only work with the 70xx board. So I got a new power supply, and the correct 4 pin connector for the 72xx model (this is an ADP-300-FR model) the pins all fit correctly.

It will simply not turn on. Now, the power cord is different too, as some might be aware the first two models of PS4 Pro have a bigger connection and the last model uses a smaller 2 pin plug. So what I did is try using an older power cable, made sure my power cables were correct (one is an I-Cheng IS-037A which I'm pretty sure is my old PS1 power cable. The second is a YUNG-LI YC-13 with a power rating of 125v 10Amps) Neither of these seem to work.

As of right now I am getting a 'PS4 Pro power cable' from Amazon, it's just a new version of what these other cables are. These two are old, so I'll try to rule them out, but the fact that the system will not turn on means it could be a couple of things.

Either the specific model of the PSU and the MB are not compatible, the power plug is the issue (unlikely), or I just burned up a perfectly good board and need to replace that (there was no magic smoke). Or or, one of the two is faulty and needs a replacement.

Components bought:

MB: The Motherboard is a "SONY PLAYSTATION 4 PRO CUH-72XX AMD JAGUAR 8GB / 1GB MOTHERBOARD 1-983-930-11" purchased on eBay from acendtech.

PSU: The power supply is an ADP-300-FR Power Supply Unit bought from here, ifixit.

Remarks:

So yeah, it's a little bit of a Frankenstein of 70xx shell/minor components and a couple of major 72xx components. I looked at it, and I'm surprised many of the parts line up just fine like the little foam squares under the metal shield for the CPU. The only thing I had to do to get the board to fit on the 70xx metal shield was bend a couple of parts made to hold and seat the shield and the board together more.

I have taken it apart and put back together dozens of times now, so I'm pretty familiar with how this is arranged. That is about all the knowledge I can lend to this and even what I think may be wrong with it. (could probably get that PS4 70xx board to someone that wants to fix it but loud hot board isn't so great).

Update (12/31/23)

I have now figured out my own problem. The product I got from ifixit is burnt out. Kind of a shame. One of the parts on the board popped.

It won't turn on because the power supply is fried.

Update (1/8/24)

New power supply dropped in. It now turns on. It now needs to updates but it is now giving an error code SU-42118-6. Scoured the internet. Will not update anything from a HDD. Wouldn't let me install anything. Followed formatting procedures. I even formatted the HDD in different ways and still get the same problem. It is currently partioned with 1gb of space in FAT32 and still no dice.

Update (3/20/24) Final

So I found the issue to this error number. I eventually gave up with trial and error and turned it in to an electronics expert to try and help me fix it. So the huge deal with this error code SU-42118-6 is related to a failed hardware check, but there's nothing wrong with the hardware itself. What happened is in my particular case, I was buying and mix matching electronics. Sony has a system installed where the Motherboard and the Blu Ray drive are married together and are checked to see if they match internally. So despite all of the hardware being OEM and perfectly fine, the DRM in the patch software checks for this, and stops you from succeeding.

The huge deal with this error code SU-42118-6 is related to a failed hardware check as mentioned before, but there's nothing wrong with the hardware itself. What happened is in my particular case, I was buying and mix matching electronics. Sony has a system installed where the Motherboard and the Blu Ray drive are married together and are checked to see if they match internally.

So the only real solution is to buy used from someone who has a working PS4, if your PS4 is dead this is the end of the road short of turning in to Sony to have it fixed if they still do that now.

Correct, but if you have the motherboards and the disk drives from both consoles still, you can swap the BD daughter board from the one to the other, or even swap the Renesas IC (I know you stated you have no interest in doing board level repair, just thought I mention this). But at this point you've already almost purchased an entire console, might as well just get a working console and ebay the other stuff as is for parts.

For internal HDD use exFat. For offline update from a thumb drive, use a thumb drive that is 32gb or less and formatted in fat32.

SU-42118-6 update fail. Get the correct offline update package from sony. There are two different kinds. One is JUST an update, the other is a reinstaller+updater for when you are installing a fresh new internal drive. The Process is the same but the files are very different.

If the internal drive is fresh/new/blank, you need the full reinstall package from sony.

In either case, do an offline update.

Scroll down to which of the two is appropriate. Either the "Update system software using a pc or mac" section or "How to reinstall the PS4 console system software" section.

Sounds like maybe SU-42118-6 might be happening because the internal drive is blank in which case you need the reinstall ps4 console system software package.

An update file can't be applied to a blank internal drive, and full system software can not be installed via the internet. Good luck.
