PLEASE HELP! Mac won’t turn on after a thermal paste replacement!

I didn’t know what I did wrong! Did I somehow fried the processor or anything? I’ve already tried reconnecting all cables, making sure they’re all plugged in, plugging in the Mac to power, it just won’t turn on! Please help! I’m a student who still needs his laptop to work with!

The trackpad still works, and I can see a very faint light from the keyboard, however the Force Touch function won’t engage (since I’m not in macOS). Did I damage something hardware-level? Please help!

Try disconnect first the battery, and again reconnect all the cables and flex, check in 2x, or maybe 3x 😀 and try boot again.

I tried that, and it didn’t work at all.

Could this possibly mean that I have shorted the PCH die?

Hey there.

Guess what? I know how you feel. I too am learning about Macs everyday, and I have learned a lot about them in my life.

Now, don't freak out, if you still have the force trackpad and the keyboard lit up, you're in good hands. The Mac is still fine. My recommendation first of all is to reset the NVRAM, and then connect the Mac to an external display. That way you could tell if the internal display cable has been damaged.

Do you have FileVault enabled? If so, reset the NVRAM, connect the Mac to an external display, power on the Mac, wait 10 seconds, enter your login password, and hit the Return key. That will boot the Mac.

We can test the Mac after this: best of luck!

Hi, sorry just checked this one.

No, resetting the NVRAM or SMC doesn’t work

I’ve tried reviving the T2 firmware with another Mac, still doesn’t work.

Can I at least get all of my data again?

@dandee808 - Unfortunately there is no easy way to recover the data because the Solid State Drive (SSD) is soldered to the logic board. So, here's what I would recommend:

- First, check to see if any important files are on iCloud drive. You can access your iCloud drive via another device by going to iCloud.com

- Then, try booting using an external monitor and / or external keyboard. That way you may be able to get into macOS, and create a Time Machine Backup.

- Contact Apple Support. Apple may be able to help in order to get your data back.

- Contact DriveSavers. This company is a recovery data company that can recover data from almost any device. They are your worst case scenario, so don't start by contacting them.

Other than that, you would have to diagnose the Mac a bit further to see what the issue is. I wish you best of luck.

Are there any bent pins on any connectors? You would have to remove the connector again and look inside the connectors. Sorry sometimes the components can get zapped my static.

When I recently disassembled my 2020 macbook pro to re-paste it there was also paste from the factory application on the second, smaller integrated heat spreader (IHS) next to the main IHS on the die. I'd recommend pasting that as well with non-conductive thermal paste. Using a conductive paste could cause a short if some of it overflows the IHS and contacts or bridges traces on the die below.

Since there's no thermal paste transferring heat away from the second IHS to the heat sink, the system could be detecting a spike in heat above the maximum operating temperature (TJMax) for that chip once you power it on and the system is protecting itself from thermal damage.

If that doesn't remedy your issue, some sort of hardware damage or failure to plug in a ribbon cable could be the cause.
