Changing display assembly on the 2020 MacBook Air

The screen of my Intel MacBook Air (2020) seems to be broken (the backlight is still working but the screen stays black). If I replace the display assembly will everything work as it was before? Or will I lose True Tone or brightness control functionality or something similar due to parts pairing?

First off I would plug in an external display to make sure the rest of the system is working.

As to TrueTone... That depends on which way you go.

  • A virgin display from the display maker won't have the displays firmware installed so you won't have a working FaceTime camera. If you get a used display that will work, just not offer TrueTone as you need access to the Apple controlled Calibration tool.
  • Apple doesn't offer Intel system parts (only M1 Series and newer systems) you can't get the part directly from Apple to do the job your self.
  • That leaves you with going to Apple for the repair then you'll get everything working.

Most people don't really care about TrueTone as it only gets to be an issue when working in different light temperatures editing photos as your Brain get confused from the light from the two light sources.
