Using a iPod Touch 260 GB in the car

For years I used a 160 GB Classic in my car, but the problem was it holds about a third of my cd's! So I paid about $850 to buy a new 260 GB Touch. My Classic turns itself off when I shut off my van, but the Touch stays on and dies. Now I know your thinking "shut it off" but I am a brain tumor survivor and most of the time I forget to turn it off! In 24 hours it is dead! I have the headphone jack connected to my stereo, and the jack for charging connected to the cigarette lighter. Any ideas, am I doing something wrong or is it....as usual a memory problem. I do not understand why the Classic never died. It's charge level was usually low, but it always worked. I would start my vehicle and it began to play!

Hi Ken,

It looks like there's a difference in the way the two iPods function when power is applied/removed. Rather than trying to figure out how to get the new one to work the way you want, have you considered upgrading the hard drive in your original iPod to a bigger size, or even converting it to an SD card so you can put in any size you want?

I've got an old 20GB classic that I converted to take a micro SD card and now it's running a 128 GB flash chip. The conversion is exactly as difficult as simply replacing the drive; rather than putting in a new drive, you install an adapter that lets you plug in a flash memory chip of some sort, whether that's compact flash (CF), secure digital (SD) or trans flash (TF)/micro SD, it's only limited by the hard drive interface. On mine the maximum was 128 GB so that's the biggest I could use, but you'd have to do some homework to figure out what the max size of yours is. I don't know, but I'm guessing it'll be at least as big as the new drive you got, and possibly much larger.

@ken38928 does your van turn your cigarette lighter plug off when you turn your van off? Why not just find an "always on" connection for the charger? It will be tougher on the battery for the iPod Touch but probably easier than to convert your iPod Classic. Also, let us know what version iPod Touch you have. There might be some ways in settings etc that could help as well. Something like the auto-Sleep function under the General tab in Settings? Battery drain will be minimal when it is "asleep" and it should definitely still have power in the morning.
