Will replacing a blown capacitor work and how to find a suitable one?

Hi, I have a LED colour changing tree trunk, similar to this https://www.sensesensory.co.uk/product-p...

The wrong power adapter was connected to it and a capacitor exploded. I've added some pictures below.

Is it likely to work again if the capacitor is replaced, or is there likely to be damage to the battery or other components? And how could I find the rating of the required capacitor? I can't see the rating on the exploded one.

Thanks

@dirwin46070 we need to know what voltage it is supposed to be and how much voltage it did get. Looks like the capacitor took the brunt of it :-) I would desolder the remnants and resolder the power connections. then use the properly power supply and see what happens. It appears that this capacitor is used as a noise filtering cap.

As for the will it work again ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Let's try it out and see what happens. Hopefully the exploding Cap made its sacrifices for all the other components.

Thanks @oldturkey03

The correct power supply delivers 4.2V 1.0A DC. The power supply which blew the capacitor was 12V 1800mA AC. I'll try desoldering the remnants and see what happens.

@dirwin46070 yup, if it was an AC power supply, that would do it. I really hope it'll work out for you. We'll keep on looking to see if we can make a determination on the value of that cap.

@oldturkey03 I removed the capacitor, and also disconnected the battery. No sign of life when plugging in the power supply unfortunately. I tried checking continuity between the pads where the capacitor was. The white and yellow wires go to a switch and I made sure that switch was open. The multimeter indicated continuity between the pads so I think that means there's a short in at least one of the other components on the board? Thinking this is probably beyond my repair capabilities unfortunately. Thanks for your help.

@dirwin46070 sorry about that! Don't bin it yet. Put it aside for a bit and let's see if we can come up with anything that may help you further in the future.
