MacBook not showing life signs

Hello,

I just got another MacBook off of eBay - all it said in the article is, that it's defect.

After receiving it and opening it up, it was pretty much a mess... Screws were missing, connector of the optical drive was underneath the mainboard (and therefore not connected), keyboard backlight connector was not connected, the battery was not connected and the magsafe board was also not connected. After getting everything out, renewing thermal paste and plugging everything back in, I'm still at a non working MacBook though...

Battery doesn't show any any signs of life when clicking the button on the left (no lights turning on).. MagSafe charger also is not showing any light when plugging it in.. Weirdly enough, one time, the caps lock button had his green light on, when I plugged in the MagSafe charger..

It's really weird and I don't really know, where to start.. The battery might very well be dead, however, wouldn't the MacBook show a sign of life then, when I unplug the battery and connect the MagSafe charger?

You think I can do something here or rather just toss it/resell it/use for parts?

Using your DVM you should be able to see the power at the DC-In board connector internally and then trace it to the power rails and then the battery checker header on the logic board.

Are you able to even get that far?

MacBook 15 will not start if the battery is dead. You have 2 options to check - put another charged battery in and try turning it on or leave it on charge for a while. If the battery controller is not blocked, then it is possible that it will accept a charge. The magsafe indicator may not light up immediately, so ignore it at first.

Well… If the SMC is in a latched state that would be true, if you disconnect the battery and charger, the press the power button to fully discharge the logic board holding it down for a good 15secs, you can then plug in your charger the system will spontaneously start up! Then do a clean shutdown, plug in the battery and monitor the systems charge Amber to Green MagSafe LED and if present the onboard battery checker should have 10 small LEDs lit and steady, if they blink the battery is bad.
