Questions on storage: Fusion to SSD or two drives?

Hi @danj , not sure u will see this comment but after reading this i think you can really help me.

Few years later after 2019 we have here 2024, and there is an 2017 5K iMac in front of me, inside is still original 1TB HDD with Fusion drive but its slowly but for real dying.

I have experience from Windows that changing 2,5” SATA SSD for HDD helps, but if you compare to NVMe speeds its still slow as hell.

I was about to buy Sintech adapter and buy an Samsung 990 PRO 2TB blade and change it for fusion drive and the SATA connector not conected. It is very important to me that the disc will last working without problem as long as possible without any errors and ofc with the best speed...

so, what do you recommend?

1. Leave fusion drive in slot just change the HDD for 2,5 SSD (i think there is also some adapter needed)

2. Buying OWC 1 or 2TB blade SSD that will fit the motherboard without any adapter

3. Sintech adapter and Samsung 990 pro 2TB (2 just bcs there should be better tbw than on 1tb and less)

The iMac is being used for work on graphic projects (mostly just reviewing) lot of open apps, Windows and tabs and we need that the drive will last longest as possible at the best speed possible...

Thank you very much for your answer I’m already reading everything for 2-3 days and just today i changed my opinion from Samsung to OWC..

but I believe you got much more experience...

@martindunajsky - Just to be clear here you need to pull both drives as the set is the Fusion Drive.

Can you explain a bit more about this system use. Is this static work Art/Photo pieces or Vids. Are you rendering or running a slide show or video loop type of presentation?

This gets into the data churn the drive gets. Don’t forget the drive also offers Virtual RAM and caching and some Apps use scratch space as well.

@danj - oh thats a good point, so if i need to take out the motherboard and fusion drive anyway in that case i want use there for sure at least 1TB ssd blade.

I am not the main user so not sure if I can answer all questions about system use but i will try.

They use it for advertising agency work that ofc includes vids and animations. But most of this products are made by another employees on another computers. But almost all of this products and files are being downloaded to this pc, opened, reviewed etc. Milion browser tabs, milion finder tabs, milion open windows included :) but thats probably more ram question already.

Anyway I need to play it here on performance and reliability its not so much about price tags tbh...

i can get OWC Aura Pro X2 for relative good price for both 1/2TB

990 Pro is just a bit cheaper

Just the advertised speeds on Aura are half compared to 990 Pro... but i really dont know how much of this samsung speed can that pcie slot use also while having sintech adapter between

@martindunajsky - The reason I was focusing on data churn is it might make sense to install two SSD’s here. Basically, the NVMe drive is the OS and App drive, and the SATA SSD is the data drive.

Why this is better is unlike HDDs the SSDs drive storage wears! So spitting the wear across two drives lengthens there life span. It also increases throughput!

Independent of this they need a bit of education! Depending on the App having tons of open files or web browser tabs also can stress the systems resources. So what is the amount of RAM in this system? As ideally you want to reduce the need of Virtual RAM so less stuff open/tabs can also improve things. Of course! There is a balance between work need and just being sloppy.

@danj - Yeah it makes sense I will install one sata ssd as well.

The computer is all stock rn so there is still just 8GB ram but i am about to boost it to maximum by crucial ram 4x16... maybe 2x16 would be enough but the price really allows me to do it..

@martindunajsky - The lean RAM can explain why the Fusion Drive died! The NVMe SSD in this combo setup is a OS level cache drive! So heavy data churn likely killed it (the SSD as it’s quite small)

Before you max the systems RAM let’s get some answers on use. They may not like having such a loaded system as boot-up time gets longer as you boost the RAM! Then if they are putting the system to sleep instead they should get a UPS so the open files aren’t corrupted from a disconnect or power failure. My rule of thumb is desktop systems with more than 16GB of RAM really need a UPS.

@danj - I can try it first with 32 and i ll see.. ram upgrade is easy from outside... Thank you for all you help we are learning whole life :D didnt really know that bigger ram mean longer boot up time...

but the main question is for me still unanswered:

will be better use the owc aura pro x2 R:3230/W:2445 MB/s without adapter

or Samsung 990 Pro R:7 450/W:6 900 MB/s with sintech adapter

for the pcie nvme slot.
