How is xeon support?

Are xeons supported? I have seen people swap in xeons in the 2011 models so i would assume 2012 should be the same but i have not come across anyone who has done this.

Swapped in a Xeon E3-1275 v2 i got for 23 bucks off ebay. Everything works fine and saved a bit of beer money. Also popped in a msata ssd with a 7+17 converter and booting off that nicely as well.

The issue is the generation of Intel chips. I really don’t see any benefit if you already have an i7 chip and if you have an i5 then getting to an i7 would be what I would do. Keep in mind the needed micro code is held in the EFI so only the CPU series Apple has used is within the EFI.

Between the xenon being a Broadwell series as well as most have a higher TDP which would be to high for the system you really can’t use them.

This socket only supports Ivy and sandybridge anyways and the ones im looking at maintain the same tdp.

Also its a bit cheaper, chips are basically the same but i dont see a point paying an extra 10-15 bucks for essentially a name change.

In addition xeons are not present in the 2011 imac lineup either but still maintain compatibility.

I guess i will update this thread if it worked or not when i test it.

incorrect, the xeon equivalent of the i7 3770 is a bit cheaper at my time of purchase and maintains the same tdp as its consumer version. Sandybridge and ivybridge xeons exist.
