Repair guides and disassembly information for the 14-inch MacBook Pro released in October of 2021, featuring Apple-designed M1 Pro and M1 Max SoCs. Model A2442.

Only works when plugged in

My 2021 MacBook Pro started only working when plugged in, tried all the troubleshooting possible, talked to Apple about it and they’ve determined its hardware. They want almost $900 ahead of time to send it in for repairs. What’s the most likely issue? Is it just a bad battery??

While this is likely a hardware issue, Apple tends to over do things. There are people with the skills to repair the logic board Vs replacing it.

Let’s dig a bit deeper to see if we can identify what the issue is. Install this gem of an App CoconutBattery post a snapshot of the Apps main window here so we can see it as well.

Also where do you live? Country and nearest major city. Maybe we can aim you to someone local to you who is a lot cheaper than what Apple was asking.

I live in Presque Isle Maine. The nearest Apple Store is about 4-5 hours away. I’ve worked on these computers before but not in depth. I pulled the back off and disconnected the Battery and the battery controller and left it for a few minutes, put it back together, and it’s worked like a charm for the past couple days. Just today, it shut itself off and would only turn on with the charger, but once it’s on it can be unplugged and stay on. (No it wasn’t dead. It was at 85% when it powered on)

I have a feeling it’s going to fall back into only working while plugged in and dying as soon as it’s not. I’ll download that coconut battery and test that. Thanks!

@ethanthibeault - Boy you’re way up there! When I was a kid my uncle convinced my dad and me to go fly fishing along the Aroostok River, we did catch some just don’t remember what though.

My biggest memory was the lightning storm we had in the middle of the night between the flashes and claps I didn’t sleep much that night. At the time we had a beach house on Five Island in Bath.

Sorry I don’t know of anyone in Maine and going to an Apple Store will be expensive as they only do logic board replacements, not repairs.

As to your problem it’s clear the battery is in good shape but the SMC logic has a problem as it’s not reporting the systems date. Yet the battery info is being displayed. Haven’t seen this before so I can’t tell you what has failed. But it’s within the SMC logic area. This shouldn’t require a logic board, just a repair of the logic.

Did you have a liquid spill into the keyboard or trackpad areas? As that could explain things a bit of corrosion on a trace or damaged SMD device.

@danj CoconutBattery can’t find manufacturing date on newer Apple Silicon Mac’s due to the new randomized serial number Apple has implemented over the past few years. The serial number is no longer able to be decoded so CoconutBattery cannot tell the age of the system. Article is discussing the iPhone 15 but it is the same issue. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/coc...

@thequacker - Your right!! I guess I needed that second cup of joe this morning. That’s what I get staying up late watching a good movie.

Never been spilled on, dropped, or abused in any way. Always kept in a very well padded case
