Apple's 2016 revision to their laptop lineup targeted at professional users. Features a 15-inch, 2880-by-1800 Retina display, quad-core Intel Core i7, 256 GB / 512 GB /1 TB / 2TB storage options, 16 GB RAM, and a keyboard equipped with a Touch Bar. Released November 2016. Features Model A1707.

Are the connectors for the touch bar a standard?

This is a weird question not about repairing the touch bar, but about the connectors that it uses. I want to add a touch bar esc interface to a different laptop and I was curious to know if the connector on the bar was some sort of standard. I see that there are two connectors on it and thought that one could be the display & touch and the other is for the finger sensor. (I don’t care about the finger sensor) Is this the case, or are they both proprietary connectors? I could not find this info anywhere and sorry if this is not the right place to ask this.

Thanks

-Colin

Update (09/04/24)

Sorry,

Late 2016 or 2017 15" MacBook Pro with Retina display

If they are different, would any of them work?

Here's an image for the connectors on the main logic board for the 2016 15-inch MBP. Not sure if these connection types follow any sort of standard. Good luck!

I doubt one will be able to interface the unit to another system without some serious coding skills to offer a useful interface.

Apple really messed up with this concept. As they put it in the wrong place. It should have been just below the main display so it’s within the plane of one’s vision as well a more protected space.

I would have liked seeing it on the HomePod as the top control unit of the mini and a band around the bigger model to offer the same functions and maybe a marque type of display telling you some useful info of the artist or song. I could even see it offer a stock ticker or other desired info that you may want at a fingers tip.

Even though this is not my forte, I want to give it a shot since I think that a tangible row of program specific (Most likely manually added) is a very useful tool since I am often using the same shortcuts over and over again. It almost made me switch to mac, but sadly all the programs I need are supported well on mac, especially back then.

@colinsz - You’ll want to have a working MacBook Pro with a TouchBar to probe the code to see what are the APIs needed to interface. Access to the developer code and lastly create a mechanical interface for your bar TouchBar to inject signals via something that also has a well developed code interface like a Raspberry Pi and lastly good C coding skills!
