Would a 2019 logic board work in this model?

I’m looking to upgrade my 2017 iMac and I understand that the stock board will only support up to a i7-7700k. The 2019 board supposedly works with up to a i9-9900. When looking at part compatibility the screens seem to be cross compatible which was my biggest worry.

Looking around the internet the only example I can find of the board swap working was on this forum. A user on here swapped his 2017 27” board for a 2019 27” board and claimed it worked but he didn’t go into any more detail. I am not worried about the cost of the swap since I got the computer for $25, I just want to mess around with it and upgrade it as best as I possibly can!

The 21.5” systems use a different logic board than the 27” models. Apple never offered a i9 chip in the 21.5” and the power supply and systems cooling won’t support it.

If I were to use a chip with the same TDP as the original i7 it should work though right?

@kdn777 - The needed microcode would be the hang up as Apple never loaded the needed microcode in their firmware. Sorry 😞
