MackBook air Randomly Shuts Down

Hi

I have a 2015 MacBook Air which keeps randomly shutting down. Sometimes it will go for hours and if I close the lid it will open days later still going. On other occasions it will shut down after only a few minutes to an hour.

There is no warning it will just be a black screen and it has shut down. Pressing the start button it starts up again. Occasionally pressing the start button immediately after a shutdown it will not start and requires a few presses before it will start again.

The battery was replaced about 2Years ago with an iFixet one and the battery count shows 121.

I have tried various online differnt key press type suggestions all to no avail.

Could the battery be the cause and if so what suggestions would you make.

Could the SSD cause this to happen?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Allan

I would try to complete fresh install 1st to see if that cured anything....

Yeah I have done that so far it seems to be OK. I did cheat however and did a non standard update and installed macOS Sequoia 15.0 The old mac actually runs better than it did on Monterey. Not quite as fast as my MacBook Pro M2 but not too shabby.

Most likely your battery is failing. I would install this gem of an App CoconutBattery so you can get a better idea of your batteries health. Post a snapshot of the Apps main window here for us to see as well, then we can see what’s the next direction.

Why would you think the battery is failing when it only has a count of 121, genuine question not being a smart ass.

@knightal94303 - Cycle counts is one method of measure. But it doesn’t always tell us if the battery is good or not. This root issue is many people use a laptop as a desktop always having it plugged in. While I’m just as guilty as the next person the battery doesn’t get the discharge it needs to stay healthy! Just like you are me sitting in a chair all day never walking very far our arteries and heart can get clogged and weak and fail us. That is why seeing what CoconutBattery tells us is important. Can you post a screenshot so we can see?
