Overheating to point of emergency shutoff.
Alright, I think my charger is starting to finally go after all these years.
I use it for my Early 2015 13" Retina MacBook Pro. The charger itself is the 60W version.
Recently I've noticed it's been shutting itself off often. As in, charge light turns off, and it stops charging the battery.
When it does this, upon noticing I unplug it, the first time I made the mistake of grabbing the charging block, (I have learned to NOT do that now as I gave myself a decent burn) whenever this happens the charging block is horrifically warm.
The first time this happened I had shrugged it off as an isolated event, as my cat had been sitting on it, and well, my cats pretty warm.
Then it happened 2 more times while having nothing covering it.
The most recent incident was about 5 minutes ago, I noticed a slight burnt smell, (I had also noticed this with the other incidents) my charger was still charging, but I unplugged it and briefly tapped the charger with my finger, it was overheating. I had likely noticed it just before it would've shut itself off.
The charger itself is in surprisingly good shape for it's age, (at least externally, I can't see the inside.) Wire is starting to turn yellow in places, and there is a small tear in the coating but the wires are intact.
I have also noticed that ONLY the block gets warm, not the cable.
My computer's battery is not the best, so I 80% I have it plugged in.
The only other charger I have right now is a Apple MagSafe 2 45W one, not entirely sure if using it would have some sort of negative effect though.
Battery temp showed as 31c before being plugged in, so it actually dropped a bit.
Bu iyi bir soru mu?
Your battery will get warm and the charger will stop charging as the BMC logic between the two with stop charging when going over the threshold of about 30c.
What I find curious is the battery was manufactured in 2015 for a system sold in 2017. I can see a year but two makes me wonder if this is the original battery or not.
As far as the MagSafe2 charger that won’t work as that is for the MacBook Air and runs on a different voltage and the connection is also different physically.
For now let the system fully charge, but let’s make sure the MagSafe connection is good clean off the contacts on both sides.

Not the original battery, the original was replaced a couple months ago, it had exactly 1519 cycles on it.

@computermoth - Well! You got your money’s worth on that battery! Where did you buy this one? Still let it charge up left alone over night (good 8 hours if not more). Then checkout CoconutBattery to see where you are and how the charge feels.

Computer takes about an hour to charge when left alone, would it be necessary to do it overnight knowing this?

@danj - I've just noticed that CoconutBattery states that my battery is discharging at about 37-48 watts.
I do admit that I do NOT know what a 'normal' battery discharge rate is, but thought I should mention this.
