M1 MacBook Pro backlight still works but screen doesn’t

Hey everyone I’m in quite a situation right now. Out of nowhere, my 2021 M1 MacBook Pro’s screen stopped working. The backlight is still on and I can still log in, but the display is grey and blurry. I’ve attached a picture below.

I’m in desperate need of help as I am a student and need to get work done. The cherry on top is that I am currently traveling overseas and won’t be back home for another month, so I don’t have access to a lot of resources that could help me get through this. I have a lot of important files on my Mac so resetting it isn’t an option for me. Is there anything I can try to fix this?

Have you tried connecting an external display? You’ll need to close the display so the external becomes the primary display. See if you can access things using an external keyboard and mouse.

Yes, external displays work, meaning that the embedded hardware for the display probably spontaneously fried. There were slight signs before with the frame buffer acting weird after my laptop slid off a couch two weeks before.

I was able to set up an automation so that when I’m in finder, I can use a button command to automatically connect to my iPad and mirror the display. Worked fine for about a day but now (just my luck) sidecar keeps timing out. Went to an Apple reseller in Prague to buy an expensive 40 Gbps cable and that doesn’t seem to help with my temporary solution.

From what I’ve read, the only fix is to take it to Apple because only they can activate new hardware. Aside from the atrocious price they’ll charge, I’m only staying in various cities in Europe a couple days at a time (backpacking trip) so I can’t get it fixed.

Anyway, there’s my rant. Wish me luck with getting sidecar to work again soon (I’ve already fallen behind in school). Nothing else I can really do until I get back to the States

@ppdubz79 - Well thats not true! You can repair the system by replacing the display assembly! You'll need to either get a used display as that will have a working camera, you won't have TrueTone though. Or you can order directly from Apple a replacement via their self repair web site. Then you'll have access to the paywalled calibration tool
