Repair guides for the MacBook Air, Apple's current line of consumer laptops.

Impossible repair? (LCD Orange flex cable)

Long story but let's keep it simple, the orange COF ribbon cable got accidentally sliced.... I KNOW this is a very difficult thing to repair if even possible at all, but let's give it a go.... There is a method that is used to join a LCD cable that has the 'Flexgate' issue, can that same principal be used to fix this? I have another LCD that I can take the orange flex cable from so my plan would be to somehow shave the plastic exposing just enough of the pins, then using the other part of donor cable that has been shaved across the center 'stick them together' either by soldering if possible OR using a paper clip to hold them together like a sandwich or something like that..... If anyone has some method or idea I would be grateful on the process. Yes I know these are originally machine pressed on and normally cannot be replaced. But, let's try and fix it because that is what we are all here for :)

I can buy a new LCD for around $40 but 50% of the time they break when installing..... my least favorite repair.

You are attempting a task that is as difficult as CRISPR that is used today. Sadly, we can’t splice lines this small.

The only hope is to desolder the ribbon cable from the LCD panel to replace it but this too is difficult without the tools and jigs to do it. It also requires a bit of skill that you likely don’t have (even I don’t have the needed skills either).

In the long run it’s time just to replace the display panel or the whole display assembly. As we don’t have enough info on your exact system I can’t offer you a parts source for either.

For reference, this is the cable which caused Flex-gate in the 2016/17 MacBook Pro’s. Note the bulging trace lines as these are thicker and much wider than the LCD data lines we have here.

I jave filed the question under MacBook Air as that is what it is refering to, the LCD's have the same orange ribbon cable type. AS the question said, I know we cannot replace the whole part. Hence just asked for advice or any tips on if someone has done that before. But anyway, thanks for your answer, it didn't help much at all. And as for Crispr they are a part of the transhuman agenda, check out the IoB (Internet of Bodies) and the IoT (Internet of things) and then you may start to realize some things ;) Can't say more, pointless and off topic not for here. Anyway, the tech guy at a repair place here said he maybe able to do it as he has fixed similar small fragile plastic cables inside other gadgets this way before with success :) Will Update on it. Nothing is impossible.....

@livfe - Neither gets into cell architecture which was the reference to CRISPR as that gets into the molecular construction. Splicing very tiny copper lines is in the same vein. Maybe in the future we will have robots that can do this so far that’s not real.

tarafından

@danj So exposing the lines and then joining them to each other won't work but is possible in a flexgate repair? It is worth a try even though it is very fiddly and time consuming.... we can only try even if it fails. Helps if I can find the donor piece I saved somewhere lol

tarafından

@livfe - The copper traces are a 100 times bigger! Which is why people have managed to do it. But sadly it doesn’t last. Instead people replace the flex, I’ve posted the 13” LCD cable in my answer above.

@danj It's the end of the road for this question and repair..... the tear is where the bend is which will make this one not possible.... IF it were in a more 'workable' position then we could try it..... oh well..... just asking.
