Repair guides and disassembly information for the 14-inch MacBook Pro released in October of 2021, featuring Apple-designed M1 Pro and M1 Max SoCs. Model A2442.

MacBook Pro 14-inch M1 Not Charging via MagSafe or USB-C

My MacBook Pro 14-inch M1 refuses to charge, whether I use MagSafe or USB-C. It only charges very slowly when the MacBook is powered off. When it's on, the LED stays orange (without blinking), but there’s no charging happening.

I also found that one of the USB-C ports on the left side isn’t functioning at all—it doesn’t detect USB drives, while the other USB-C port works fine (though still no charging).

I followed tutorials and opened the MacBook, but everything looks intact. All the ports appear undamaged, and there’s no visible wear or issue.

This problem started suddenly, with no prior warning or incidents. I’ve been using the official Apple charger and cable.

As part of troubleshooting, I tried downgrading macOS using another Mac, but that didn’t help. I've also tried replacing the faulty usb-c and MagSafe connectors with ones from a working MacBook Pro, but the issue persists. I’m starting to suspect that the logic board is the problem, even though I haven’t done anything to damage the Mac.

At the moment, the battery is at 100%, and the MagSafe LED is green, but the Mac still isn’t recognizing the Apple Power Adapter (see attached photo).

Well… you likely have two issues, the first is a bad port assembly, if you have the patience I would remove the port to see if it’s damaged or just needs cleaning. If damaged here’s the part MacBook Pro 14" (A2442, A2779, A2918, A2992) and 16" (A2485, A2780, A2991) USB-C Board. You’ll will need to pull the logic board to gain access following this guide MacBook Pro 14" 2021 Logic Board Replacement

Sadly, your logic board likely needs repairs as well, after you reassemble the system test things again if it’s not better it’s time to get your logic board fixed. Here’s a deeper review on what will be needed: Fastest 2021 Macbook Pro "No power" Repair.

I’ve already disassembled the MacBook and inspected the ports. They’re clean and show no signs of corrosion or damage. I also tested with components from a working MacBook, but the issue persists, indicating that the logic board is likely faulty.

@leoburn - It’s likely you zapped the driver chip which also knocked out the charging chip as well. Power line/Lighting is often the source of the problem. Make sure to use a surge suppressor and the outlet/buildings ground services are properly wired. You’ll be surprised how many outlets are nor fully wired, get an outlet checker to be sure.

In any case unless you have the needed tools and skills like Paul Daniels has (watch the vid I linked) you’ll need to find someone that does. Where do you live county and nearest major city? Maybe we can aim you to someone.

Thanks so much for your help, Dan! I’m based in Morocco, and unfortunately, MacBooks aren’t very common here. We don’t even have an Apple Store, haha. Looks like my only option might be to just buy a working logic board!

@leoburn - I love Morocco! Traveled to Casablanca for a holiday to the old city. The food the spices and the duststorms!🤨

Let me check things out where you can get your system fixed.

That's cool. Next time you should visit other cities since Casablanca is the economical and also the biggest city.

Well, today, I was able to charge my MacBook to 100% of course by charging it while it was off. However, once I powered it on, the MagSafe LED turned green (was previously orange), but sadly macOS didn't show any indication that the charger was detected. I ran the macOS diagnostics, and oddly, it didn’t report any issues (code ADP000), whereas it previously showed the PPP020 error (I get it while the AC charger was plugged in). The diagnostics also didn't pick up that the USB-C port on the left side isn't working at all.
