Can my 2017 iMac be used as a display only?

I have a 2017 iMac the i7 core, 5k retina 4.2 GH but Apple’s newest OS and app upgrades won’t work with it anymore. I have to buy a new mini Mac but I really would like to use the display monitor as the new ones are so pricey. I just want to use it as a main display monitor and connect it to the new mini Mac. I’ve been told Apple has made it so people can’t do that so you’ll go out and drop big bucks in their newer monitors. Surely there’s a way to disconnect the whole HD and just use the monitor. Thank you.

The kit listed here is to convert this series display into a monitor. Older systems will require a different board.

Well you don’t need to buy a new system! There is a third party shim service which will allow you to run a newer macOS on your system! Here’s more about it OpenCore Legacy Patcher And OpenCore - PC guide which gets into the weeds of OpenCore.

Some older apps may not run under the newer macOS releases so they may need updating or replacing. Review your current usage and if the systems processing power, RAM & Storage meet your needs for many it does.

But to answer your question you can gut the system and place within it a new interface board to reuse the LCD. Converting it into a display only.

@doug12716 - The solution here is software not hardware, allowing an older system to run a newer version of macOS so newer versions of Apps can run on the system. It’s available via GitHub site

Um...O.K., thanks, Dan! From what I can see, the GitHub site offers no guidance and no contact, so...prolly not worth the trouble. Appreciate the answer, though!
