I recently acquired an hp officejet 5510 printer made in 2005 and I need the appropriate software and driver. I spoke with an hp tech support person and was informed that software and driver is not available for that printer, Is there a source for the appropriate software and driver ? I would gladly pay for the items. Thank you for any assistance and guidance.

There are a few sources online for the drivers. Here's just one example.
Search online for officejet 5510 drivers to find others that may suit you better.
Be aware that generic software i.e. non official, may be very basic and may not support all the features of the printer. It can vary between the different suppliers of the software.
As always when downloading and installing software, scan it for viruses, malware etc with an anti virus program in your computer, before installing it.
