Right fan 0 RPM, but spinning minimum speed

Device was getting hotter than normal so I thought to change the thermal paste since it hasn’t been changed since 2018.

I opened the device, removed the board and put everything back together again; however, on booting into macOS and using iStatMenus to check the thermals it showed that the right fan is reporting 0 rpm and trying to control the speeds for the right fan doesn’t work but the fan does spin on what seems to be the lowest speed. I don’t know if this was an issue from before or because of me.

Left fan works fine and reports speeds correctly.

Running Apple Diagnostics it reported error PPF003 and after some research I decided to change the right fan especially since I do confess to not unlocking the latch for the zif connectors while removing them so I thought I might’ve damaged the flex cable or connector but visually nothing seems broken so I got a used one from a local parts supplier and tried it but it didn’t fix the issue and running apple diagnostics again it now shows PPF003 and PPF004 and I’m not sure If the PPF004 was also in the first test and I just didn’t notice it I will try to place back the old fan to see if the second code disappears.

Some users on this board says changing the keyboard flex cable might fix the issue; however, before spending any more on unnecessary items is there a way to test wether it’s the cable, fan or anything else? I know my way around circuits but I never did it on a laptop’s motherboard.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The fans have a tachometer to feedback the fans RPM. So either the fan is bad or the controlling logic is not working within the logic board.

I would first double check the fan cable is not damaged and the ZIF connection is properly set. I fear you may have damaged the logic board which will need access to the schematics and board view drawings as well as the skills to diagnose at the board level.

Maybe we can aim you to someone with the skills. Where do you live? Country and nearest large city.

The original fan cable isn’t damaged and I did get another fan albeit a used one. The zif connector looks fine with no apparent damage. I found the boardview and schematics for my model and i can probe, measure and solder but not micro solder.

The most I’ve ever done was fix a weight scale corroded SMD feet and resolder plus tracked down a failed connection to an antenna from the a chip’s datasheet and lastly rewired a couple pins on a CH341 programmer.

I’m from Cairo, Egypt.

I’ve updated the OP with images of what I can do.

Are the fans interchangeable so I can test if the right fans are actually working by plugging them in place of the working left fan to check if I just bought another damaged fan?

@asamahy - I can’t answer that as I haven’t dug into the connection my self that deep.

@Dan do I just probe for continuity with the pins from the keyboard connector that concerns the fan with the pins on the zif connector?

@asamahy - That’s a good start!
