Mid 2014 MacBook Pro Dead after NVram reset

I've a Mid 2014 MacBook Pro. I bought it second had about 5-6 years ago. A couple of weeks after buying it the previus owner called me to check everything was going OK with it, I thought that was weird, but it worked OK apart from it not waking up immediately when I'd open the screen.

Recently it went into a boot chime loop, and form owning the same model before I disconencted the batetry and booted it fine, but with throttled performance. I ordered a new battery and fitted it only to get the boot chime loop. Got another battery and the same boot chime, so I figired it must be hte machine. With no battery insatlled the machine worked perfectly fine apart from it being slow, so I really didn't think there was an issue.

There was a reference to on old windows partition from either when I owned it or the prevoius owner. I'd a head injury in 2013 so I have memory issues, but I don't remember insatlling a windows bootable partition on it. I use GPT and checked with it for ideas and it suggested resetting the SMC and NVram. I did that and the thing died, no more booting. If I touch the power button the fans spin up weakly. I removed the SSD and tried boooting, weak fans, I disconencted the IO board and SSD and tried booting, weak fans.

If I hold the power button, connect the battery and then the pwer supply, and let go of the power buttons I get a whoosh of the fans. I did this because on an ifixit post somebody suggested this to see if the logic board was still good. Could the board have gone bad from an Nvram clearing? - I've tried every concievable confiruration of button pressing to boot into recovery or safe or evry other mode and all that happens is the bloody fans spin up as soon as I het the power button, if i hold the power button down again for about 10 second the fans turn off. If i disconenct and reconnect the power cord they come on again.

Can anybody help please because GPT broke my machine, well I broke it taking GPT's advice as gold. All help is appreciated because I am buggered if I can't get it working. I have a second machine same model and year and I can't get version of apple's configurator that'll work on that machine. I also connected an external monitor, but it didn't help.

Let’s backup here a bit this is an Intel system as such you should need the original configurator tool was for managing corporate/school systems, configurator2 is for T1 and ARM based Macs

So while you are trying to reset things PRAM/NVRAM is not what you need to focus on, SMC (System Management Controller) is what you need focus in on. Here we need to disconnect the battery and all other external power & port connections. Now press and hold the power button for a good 15secs to fully discharge the logic board, now reconnect the MagSafe charger the system should spontaneously startup, let it fully boot and then do a clean shutdown.

Not sure if that will fix things here given what you have stated. Ideally you need to check the battery as well as run the onboard diagnostics. That’s the SOP to try to narrow down what the problem is.

Install this gem of an App to check your battery and charger CoconutBattery

To run diagnostics review this Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac

Let us know what you discover and post a snapshot of the CoconutBattery’s main window here so we can check it out as well.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your reply. I used to be more up to speed on tech, but gave up around 2015, which is why I've not updated my mac, that said it's been a pretty solid machine for what I do, and the cost of buying a new machine isn't something I can aford, so your hekp is doubly appreciated. I know that's not info you've asked for, but I thought I'd explain. I reset the SMC and ran this as per Gpt's advice. sudo nvram -c

It was after this that the Machine no longer powered up. I been through a lot of variations on diconencting the battery and mag safe, and reconecting them after discharging the board, but I am getting nothing but the weak fans whirring up. The battery is a new battery, so I think we should consider it good. I feel that when the OEM battery issue (that may not have been a battery issue) started I disconencted the battery and could use the machine fine, so I think that's where the problem might be, something to do with power management because the machine got to a place where it didn't like

@ben8896646 - FYI: I still have two 2015 15”MacBook Pro’s which I still use as I still like the removable storage aspects. With the M4 release I may end up jumping to a newer system given the more powerful chip, still don’t like the soldered storage aspects. It’s starting to be solved by a few 3rd parties so let’s see what happens.

Well, sadly this is not looking good for you if all you are getting is a whimper of a fan sound that’s a telltale sign of a much deeper issue with the logic board.

Just like how a good GP doctor will pass to a better skilled specialist I’m sorry to say that’s the case here. You need to find someone with the deeper skills on fixing Mac logic boards. Maybe we can aim you to someone, where do you live? Country and nearest large city.
