In June 2017 Apple updated its 13" MacBook Air with a newer Broadwell Intel Core i5 processor, resulting in slightly increased performance and battery life.

Why does unscrewing fixes my MacBook?

Hi,

The keyboard and the touchpad stopped working on my MacBook, after it got some moisture (it was in my backpack when I got caught in the rain).

Trying to figure out what was the cause of the problem, I disassembled the MacBook. I looked at the motherboard and the battery, but didn't find anything that would catch my eye, and reassembled it back, but didn't use all the screws to make it easier to disassemble it again later.

Surprisingly, the computer started functioning normally.

After experimenting a bit, I found that if I unscrew the bolts in the lower right corner (1 that holds the battery, and 3 that hold the cover), it is working. If I put them back in, the keyboard and touchpad stop working.

Obviously, this is not right.

It seems to me that the ingress of water caused some hardware problems. Consequently, the keyboard block is activated by the software when I turn the computer on. But if I unscrew the bolts, some circuit opens, and that causes the removal of the block.

My questions:

1. Does anyone understand how all this can even be possible?

2. Do my conclusions make any sense?

3. Which parts are most likely to be defective: the battery, the keyboard controller, etc.?

4. How safe is it to use the computer without these bolts? Won't this cause something else to break down?

5. Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Thanks!

Presuming you have put it all back together using all the screws and your having this issue, can you remove the battery & lay it on a flat surface? Is the battery bent or bowed or worse is it swollen in any way? Also, check the KB & TP cable hasn't any damage on the pins or if it isn't laying flat to the KB backlight cover. My guess is there is some kind of pressure being created that is possibly affecting things. Check this 1st and we can go from there.

@livfe Thank you for your reply.

It seems like the pressure is in fact the issue. The laptop starts working without problems when I apply a little bit of pressure to the keyboard from the inside (it is located underneath the battery). All the wires and cables appear to be ok. The battery has a plastic frame. Doesn't look like it can be deformed because of moisture. At this point, I will try to replace the keyboard. Also, the laptop has become slower to boot. This used to happened almost instantly, but now I have to wait for that progress bar for some time. After it finally starts, the computer seems to be working normally.

Is the battery swollen? As the battery ages it often can swell up which then can place pressure on other parts. As you did get the system wet it’s likely the water offered a short condition which caused the battery to quickly discharge which caused the gas buildup within the battery.
