After replacing the battery it's not booting

Hello,

I replaced the battery on my Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen2 with this one: Lenovo ThinkPad P1 and X1 Extreme Battery - 01AY969 (iFixIt support confirmed that it's compatible with the Gen2). After installing the battery everything seemed to work: the power LED was orange and KDE indicated that the battery was at 72% and charging.

I worked for a while on my other laptop, and then noticed that the Lenovo was powered off. It will not power on at all now. I removed the battery but it's still dead.

Any ideas what the issue might be?

I tried using the reset button on the bottom, but that did not work either (left it pressed for more than 1 minute). Right now the laptop does not have a battery in it, I'd been running it like that for a couple of months since my old battery inflated and I hadn't ordered a new one.

Does the laptop indicate that the battery is charging when the charger is connected and the laptop is not on?

Thanks for your response @jayeff. The power LED stays off. I also tried with a USB-C 100W charger in case my Lenovo charger had somehow failed, but that doesn't work either (no power LED, laptop does not turn on, either with or without the battery).

I also tried unplugging the CMOS battery for 1 minute while the main battery was unplugged, and again tried the reset button. No response.

What is the model number of the motherboard (printed on the board itself)?

The schematics may need to be found to find out why no voltage is being detected (or power light on) when the charger is connected.

I couldn't find them when searching for the laptop make and model number but this is not unusual. Knowing the board model number usually finds them though

@jayeff FWIW the model number of the laptop is 20QV-CTO1WW. I couldn't find the model number on the motherboard itself, but I found this page: https://www.gotlaptopparts.com/products/.... The pictures seem to show that the model number is printed on the other side of the motherboard (the one that goes towards the keyboard, not the one that is accessible by removing the bottom plate). I wonder if the number mentioned in that page (448.0GU06.0021) is applicable, even though that's an i7 and mine is an i9.

I would suggest you to contact your manufacturer regarding the battery issue. As of now you can power drain your laptop and check if it helps.

Follow the steps below:

  • Disconnect the AC Adapter.
  • Remove the Battery.
  • Hold the Power button down for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  • Reconnect the AC adapter.
  • Turn on the laptop power.

Hope it helps.

The schematics have the full circuit diagram including the model (type or part) number or value of each component in the circuit, shown next to the component, making it easier to find replacements

Usually the 1st page shows the block diagram which is useful as it shows which page in the schematic is applicable to each section of the circuit e.g. LCD, USB, Keyboard etc

It also has a power on voltage sequence chart showing the individual voltage feeds

The one I linked (unless the seller got it wrong) is for your model I think, as it shows LPM-2 MB 18809 as the motherboard model in the underside image of the board as well as showing Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme 2nd Gen 20QV 20QW i7-9750H by the seller. (which is what you quoted)

The one you linked doesn't mention the 18809 model variant number, so I don't know if it is applicable to an i7 variant or not.

The difference between the two is that the one you linked also has a boardview file¹, which makes it easier to locate the components on the board as a lot of them aren't marked on the board itself with their circuit designation, whereas the one I linked only has the schematic so it will be a lot harder to locate the actual component on the board.

¹ You will need a boardview program to open the file to see it, whereas the schematic is a pdf. (examples only)
