Repair information and guides for the minor refresh of the Late 2018 MacBook Air, with the same model number (A1932) and EMC number (3184). This model features a True Tone display and a slightly revised battery.

Why does my MacBook have no sound?

Hello

I have a Macbook Air 2019 Model A1932, and the speakers just doesn't wan't to work.

I've tried alot of things to get it back working, yet it's still not working.

  • Reinstalling macOS
  • Updated macOS
  • Restart CoreAudioD
  • Replug Speakers
  • Ran Apple Diagnostics, No Errors
  • Tried Safe Mode
  • Resetting NVRAM & SMC

In my top bar, there's no sound icon. When i go into settings, and click sound, then the Macbook does recognize the speakers. But still won't play any sound through them.

Bad speakers maybe?

And it has no water damage, for anyone wondering.

Update (03/18/25)

Audio board is cooked @livfe

And so is the flex cable

Now it’s confirmed

Ouch, time to go online shopping :(

That’s liquid damage!

tarafından

@danj Figured, still don't know how

tarafından

@hiyxus - doesn’t always due to a spill, it could be humidity (condensation from taking the system from a cooler AC space to a very humid outside).

Nice to know now, was so confused. Well time to find a new audio board and flex cable

A common issue with headphone jacks is the switches held inside, here’s a deeper dive into the different setups Understanding Audio Jack Switches and Schematics, jump down to Switching Audio Between Speakers and Headphones.

The easiest fix here is just replacing the MacBook Air 13" (Late 2018-Mid 2019) Audio Daughterboard as outlined in this guide MacBook Air 13" Retina Display 2019 Audio Board Replacement

Replace a corroded, dirty, or damaged headphone jack by swapping in an audio daughterboard containing the headphone jack and connectors for one speaker and the Touch ID sensor. Görseli

Have you tried using a bluetooth headset and a headphone via the jack port?

A post here might shed some light (Audio board issue)?

Yes, i've tried using a bluetooth headset and then it seems to work, also a bluetooth speaker, also workd.

Let me rephrase that

Yes, with a bluetooth headset connected, then i get sound in my headset. When using a bluetooth speaker i get sound in the speaker. But when disconnected then the internal speakers still doesn't wanna work

tarafından

@hiyxus Same symptoms as in the post I linked to before, check it out, seems likely the Audio Board has develop an issue sadly.....

tarafından

So what you're saying is that it might be my Audio board that is cooked? Even though there is no water damage, and touch id works?

tarafından

@hiyxus Cannot be 100% certain, but if your able to follow the steps to diagnose it from that post it may confirm it. These things amongst others can 'go wrong' by themselves unfortunately.

Been reviewing this issue for the past 2 days - more than it is worth. The audio controller onboard the headphone connector based daughterboard can be replaced with the 'LC0' suffixed parts. Using this replacement from Mobile Sentrix, we did restore the audio for a while on the left channel (only). Right channel remains dead. Attempted to replace the right side amplified with the same 'LC0' part and now both channels are dead. In reviewing the schematics, there is a mention of the I2C / SMBUS addresses for the audio amp. The strappings and chart are NOT available to us if we solder in the 'LC0' suffix but assuming they are present if soldering in the 'LB2' part. Noting this, the 'LB2' must be a pseudo custom part made for Apple to offer the custom I2C slave addresses. As of this writing, we have lost audio on both channels again as reported by the customer who took in this same unit to another shop for a LCD replacement. During this service, they lost the camera and audio.

In the past, the same audio amp board had a hard short due to a capacitor onboard. This was tanking the main ppbus rail. No schematics available for the audio board but fluxed and removed each cap on the ppbus rail and the short was removed and the board worked once again.

Will update this thread with any progress of this continued repair.
