Battery Replacement - Nothing works now.

I did a battery replacement on my 2015 Macbook Pro last night using an iFixit kit. My laptop is old, but besides needing a new battery, nothing else was wrong with it. It worked fine when hooked up to a charger, but it would shut off in a short period of time when off the charger, and I could feel that the batteries were swollen too. But otherwise, it was a great laptop in complete working order. I would have gone through Apple to get the battery replaced, but Apple doesn't do battery replacements for a computer this old. So I felt my only option was to buy the parts and replace it myself.

I thought everything went well during the removal/installation, I thought I was extremely careful. After hooking up the new battery, I plugged in my laptop and turned it on. The login screen came up, but there is now an X over my battery icon. Every time I try to log in, the computer shuts off. I have tried a SMC reset and a NVRAM reset. I have tried disconnecting and re-connecting the battery connector. I didn't think I did anything wrong during the installation; the trackpad works, the speakers work, the keyboard works. But the laptop keeps shutting off, even when plugged in. I can't get past the login screen without it shutting off. I've never had an issue with my charger before. And the new battery won't charge because my computer won't recognize it. I'm hoping the whole thing isn't ruined, I thought I would save some money/reduce waste by repairing my laptop rather than buying a new one, but now it looks like I will have to buy a new one anyway.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it. I'm kind of at a loss of what else to try here. My closest Apple store is over an hour away, and I'm not sure what they would really be able to do for me, with the laptop being 10 years old and having attempted the replacement myself, I doubt they will feel very inclined to help. I'm open to any suggestions whatsoever.

Let’s give this a try, disconnect charger and then unplug the battery, then press and hold the power button with nothing connected for a good 15 sec to fully discharge your system. Now leaving the battery unplugged, plug in your charger, it should spontaneously restart, let it finish and do a clean shutdown, now plug the battery back in. Did that help? If it did let’s install CoconutBattery and take a snapshot of the Apps main window and post it here so we can see it as well. While the battery likely needs replacing your system should at least boot up without issues just by the charger alone. While doing anything heavy will likely crash as the charger won’t offer the system what it needs for a heavy job, so don’t push it!

Hi, thank you for your response- I disconnected the charger, unplugged the battery, discharged the system, and plugged in the charger, but the system doesn't seem able to restart. The apple logo comes up, and my fans start to spin, and then the whole thing shuts off. It seems it won't even load the log-in screen anymore. So unfortunately I am not able to get to the point of installing CoconutBattery. Thank you for trying though I appreciate it!

@danj I'm also seeing from other folks online that a 2015 Macbook Pro will basically not boot at all without battery power even when plugged in to the charger; that the Apple boot screen may appear and then shut down and start back up again in a reset loop. I definitely think that's what I'm experiencing. Is it possible that iFixit sent a dud battery?

@jessicah93696 - I have two of these and they will boot without a battery if the system is healthy upto a point. We only want to see if it gets to the boot up.

What happens when you plug the battery in? Does the MagSafe charger LED stay Amber or go Green?

tarafından

@danj the MagSafe light is amber. The computer behaves exactly the same regardless of if I have the battery plugged in or not- starts up for a moment, shows the Apple logo, and then shuts off. It seems like the battery is not registering with the device at all, leading me to believe it may be defective... it seems to make absolutely no difference in performance if I have the battery plugged in or disconnected.

To disconnect the battery did you use a plastic tool (spudger) or a metallic tool ? A metallic tool could have shorted the logic board charging pins in the socket sending 12 volts to the 3.4 volts circuit. If your old battery was holding a charge you could try to connect it and check if you get a normal start up with it. If you have a multimeter you could check the charging pins with battery disconnected and charger connected. Normally you should see + - 11v on the 3 first pins, 3.4 volts on the middle pins and 0v on the last 2 pins (ground).

It seems like the most likely explanation would be that something is wrong with the new battery you installed. Given that the computer boots, even though it doesn't stay on long enough to get past the login screen, that's a good sign that you didn't break anything during the repair process. I would recommend if you have a multimeter, try probing the contact points of the battery and see if it registers any voltage (somewhere around 11.25 would be normal). If not, I would return the battery and describe your issue and see if iFixit can handle sending a replacement or give specific advice about their battery. It may also be that one of the cells that make up the battery has come disconnected, or there is an issue with the small bms board that is part of the battery.
