How to prevent iron cap from scratching the station body

Hey there, iFixit team.

The FixHub is an absolute beauty - I really love it!

When mounting the iron cap, I have to apply some force to get the metal clip to snap into place, and during that process, the metal rubs against the painted station's body.

I'm worried about scratching the paint over time from repeated mounting and unmounting. After all, it's just paint, and I'd love to keep it looking great.

Do you have any suggestions? I would love to have the clip rubber-coated in the same way the stand is.

Thank you for your feedback regarding the tool mounting. I will forward it over to our product development team for further review. In the meantime.

While the long term cosmetic quality of your product is a valid concern. One point worth noting is that the enclosure of the FixHub power station and soldering iron are both anodized aluminum. If you are unfamiliar with what anodization is I won't belabor the point but it is surface hardening method which in this case is used primarily for it's cosmetic appearance and long term durability. Here is a link that compares the two paint with anodization. https://www.lorin.com/anodized-aluminum-... This is not to say it will last forever but it should hold up quite a bit longer than a painted enclosure would have. Unfortunately, I don't believe there is really a way to avoid rubbing the clip on the enclosure at the moment. Hopefully this helps reduce some of your concern if not all of them.

Regarding the tightness of the clip, it was designed this way intentionally as it provides the necessary friction to keep the soldering iron at the users desired angle. After testing a couple different iterations the round tool holder with the tight clip performed the best at preventing the soldering iron from drooping.

Thanks for the answer.

Yes, I’m familiar with the anodisation process, but the black surface will get scuffed eventually.

I tried putting a shrink tube on the clip, but even though it’s thin, it no longer fits due to the tightness you mentioned.

If the clip were permanently attached and the station stayed on my desk, I wouldn’t be worried. But since I plan to use the station as a portable solution, I think the anodised surface will get damaged sooner rather than later. The clip has already left silver marks after just a few uses.

I certainly agree with your assessment and wish I was able to provide a more satisfying response than I did.

Piece of black insulation tape either side of the mounting point.
