Can you tell me exactly which G4 iMac you have?

tarafından

here is some info about the machine;

Machine Name: iMac

Machine Model: PowerMac6,3

CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)

Number Of CPUs: 1

CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz

L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB

Memory: 768 MB

Bus Speed: 167 MHz

Boot ROM Version: 4.7.6f0

Serial Number: QP3471WMPVX

The computer is running right now , I reset the Pmos by plugging in the power cord and pressing the on button simultaneously for 10 seconds, then turning on right after. it seems to run ok at the moment but I have not left it on for prolonged periods. I was not here when it shut down on it;s own... I only know it would not restart normally. Does that give any insight ?

Thank you so much for your help !

Best Regards,

The power supply could be the problem, it might also just be the PRAM battery. Can you tell me anything else about the failure? What was it doing before it shut down? If the time and date were incorrect or your printer dropping off line, replace the battery. Does it do anything now? Lights? Sounds? Thanks

I still think this might be your PRAM battery. Is the machine connected to the internet? Are the date and time set automatically in the system preferences? If your printer is dropping off then replace the battery.

The power supply can be replaced. The iMac G4 uses a unique power supply that is actually two individual parts, yet they are attatched. You can buy them for about $30-$70 but it depends on your model, what is your screen size, and what is your processor speed? this can be found on the bottem of the access door on the bottem of the computer. Be careful when you lay it down, since I have worked on one of these once, and layed it down and the screen was cracked by a stray screwdriver bit on my desk, so make sure your careful (It made a nice "iHemisphere" though since I decided to just remove the screen assembly and arm.)

Is it difficult to change ? where do I get one ? the date & time are still correct ...however, the iMac did turn itself off again this evening... I restarted it in the same fashion by resetting the Pmos .... I still have not seen what happens when the machine turns itself off.

My iMac goes off and on, generally within a minute or two and wont stay on. I have unplugged it for a day and it does the same thing when I plug it back in. I wont even be by the computer desk and it just goes off and on. I have had it since September of 08. Puzzled, any suggestions?

I've got one spare functional and tested power supply for iMac G4 17" LCD 1.0 GHz. If anyone is interested, I can send it anywhere around our planet. :) Contact: mx3eunos@gmail.com

PS: My iMac G4 17 died (CPU blown, unfortunately).

I have had a power up problem on my G4 iMac that has got progressively worse until the other day we had a prolonged power outage and it would not start at all. Tired PRAM reset and logic board reset - nothing. Changed PRAM battery today (nothing). Tried warming the power supply with hairdrier through top vents nothing. New power supply needed methinks and in researching came across this thread where Marco talks of re-setting the PRAM by plugging in at the same time as pressing the power on button. Hadn't heard of this technique but having nothing to lose tried it and hey presto it started up! Now it might have been a combination of factors that got it going (I'm afraid my wife needs it so not prepared to switch it off to see if I can replicate the technique but I hope by relating this history it is of help to someone who is having a similar issue

The suggestion of repeatedly pressing the power on switch while plugging in the power cable to the back revived the mac and did the trick for me. And here I was looking for a way to install my newly purchased power supply. Oh well, no need to open this baby up now.
