Repair guides and disassembly information for the 16-inch MacBook Pro released in January of 2023, featuring Apple-designed M2 Pro and M2 Max SoCs.

Horizontal lines and flickering display issue

About a week ago these visual issues have started, which I have assumed were linked to the flex cable that goes into the display assembly itself, making it impossible to fix.

The issue is triggered either by pressing the plastic bottom bezel at the left corner, or by moving the orientation of the screen.

I put my laptop for sale on a local marketplace, and someone called today saying the same happened to his 16" M1 Pro. He told me a repair shop has successfully repaired it by replacing a ribbon cable hidden behind the said plastic bezel strip, and the repair cost him very little money.

Does anyone have any idea about what exactly could've went bad so I can explain it to technicians that would attempt a repair for the laptop?

So far, I've just been quoted a full display assembly replacement costing from 800 to 1000€, which isn't an option. Thanks

Not sure what your friend's problem was exactly, there is two possible issues with the LCD ribbon cable being damaged. The first is grit has gotten into the hinge area sanding away the insulation covering the fine electrical traces or the cable got damaged by something was set on the keyboard pressing into the chin bezel plate cutting into the ribbon passing behind. The older generations used glass this series uses plastic which doesn't crack as easily as the glass, but can hide the damage.

So you'll need to inspect things to figure out which is your issue. The grit damage is the easy repair by cleaning the ribbons and then painting on a thin coat of protective paint that can adhere to the polyimide material.

If that's not the issue then the ribbon is likely damaged from something left just above the keys so when the lid was closed it damaged the cable under it. Sadly this will require a new display as unlike the backlight cable this one is a difficult cable to replace and requires taking apart the lid assembly which is not easy without damaging things a bit in the process.

Hi, thank you very much for the comment!

I have never left anything on the laptop and then closed it, so I assume that can't be the issue, I've treated it with great care and there isn't a possibility of other people having touched the laptop while I was away.

A couple more clues: the bottom flickering line seems to almost exclusively react (flicker, change in intensity) to movements on the screen, so when there's a static image, it either completely goes away or is so slight you can barely see it, also, viewing 4:3 content results in the line switching exactly to the same aspect ratio, covering only the lower center part of the screen.

For the horizontal lines, they are aggressively caused by applying pressure onto the plastic bezel strip's left corner side, and only sometimes when moving the orientation of the screen.

I believe this might need a backlight cable replacement?

I am not an expert and can't say anything for certain, just looking for more info to give it to a specialist for repair.

@sabin98861 - Your issue is within the data feed to the LCD panel not the backlight. Think this like a movie projector the lamp doesn't effect what the film has for an image as it's a static constant light. The effect of the backlight failing would be an over all dimming of the screen or if one on the light strings had failed you would have noted what we call a stage light effect similar to the old time foot lights washing light onto the back drapes.

So if we remove the object pressing into the Chin plate damaging the ribbon then it's only the grit issue or liquid damage along the hinge area. Given what I see I'm still thinking grit damage to the ribbons.

Thank you very much for the clear explanations and help. I will try and find a repair shop that could take a look at it tomorrow and will let them know your input, as it severely clears up the potential issue. Thanks again, I might get back with the final verdict.
