Press F12 and check what boot devices are available to make sure the storage drives do not say none - if you see "none" in the BIOS and nothing in the boot menu, the SSD has failed or Dell has enabled RAID for NVMe by default on that system. That said, a lot of the time Dell's diagnostics interprets a bad OS install as a hardware failure on a lot of these older machines, so it tends to come up from time to time. The exception is if you bought it used and the HD was stripped with minimal disclosure in the listing you got the machine from. If it passes diagnostics and no genuine errors like a 0-1GB lockup failure the RAID setting is the issue — toggle it off and then it comes back.
Anyway what I do is I run a 2 testing check on these knowing it happens: I will check in BIOS (F2 or F12) and make sure primary storage does not say none, if it does I know it's too far gone -- note a garbage name might show up and the machine may treat it as a missing drive as it won't know what to do with it, so it's not definitive. The other test I do is check in Linux with a copy of Debian and I check under Disks to see -- if I only see the USB drive, the SSD is missing or totally dead.

I just fixed a similar problem with a Latitude 5400. The SSD had been working, but was now unrecognized. SSD was recognized again when I changed the BIOS SATA setting from "RAID On" (the Dell default) to "AHCI". No idea when or why that setting was changed.
@stevewoott20021 Yep that’ll sometimes get you on them. I thought it was just old Dells or their NVMe VMI RAID crap was at least transparent or inactive even if default and the sole drive. I even got bit on a Optiplex 3000 recently that looked like a bad SSD when it was the RAID setting. This is a “feature” of Dells that’s as old as the E6400 from 2008.
This error can happen if the laptop's HDD or SSD isn't being detected. Try restarting and opening the BIOS to see if the drive appears. If it's missing, there could be a connection issue or a failing drive. If you have important files stored on it, avoid repeated restart attempts and consider getting the drive checked before trying repairs.
