How to restart garbage disposal

Using a flashlight first look inside do you see a spoon or other object block the impeller? Don't reach in as the motor could start up hurting you! Use some wooden chopsticks to snag the object to be safe or unplug the unit.

Do you have the Allen key that came with the unit? If you do open the doors under the sink and feel the bottom center for the hole that you can insert the key, a mirror and some light makes doing this easier. Rotate the motor a good quarter turn in each direction, does it move freely? If so try the switch again.

If not check the house fuse/breaker as often that has blown from a jammed motor. Afterwards try to start again. Depending on unit it might have its own breaker on the bottom use the mirror again to help you locate it.

If you can't get it going, check the outlet it's wired to try plugging in a tackle light. The outlet might have corroded up if it gets splashed. Otherwise time for a new one.
